Old Hempseed (Uncooked) Bin it or Boil it?

Vince Maddock

I've been given a sack of hemp seed from a buddy but it's 2 years old, it looks fine but I've no idea if it may have lost its appeal.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Soak and boil a sample ( pint) , before binning it. If it's been stored dry, should be ok.
I did consider that, but unfortunately it would only be definitive one way. If it fell apart or disintegrated during cooking it would be simple, just bin it, but if it cooked ok and looked ok I'd still have my doubts that it's not stale/bland/tasteless. I need somebody with more knowledge that me to give their opinion before I bin £50's worth of seed or before I sit behind motionless rods after catapulting thousands of small black inert seeds into my swim.

When hemp is cooked, it gives off an aroma/ smell, which would be the answer to your question.
Send me a sample, I'll do it. I think I'm qualified been cooking it since 1980's.

I've used stuff I'd stored lose in an open topped aquarium for 20+ years (I'd put it in there during a house-move) and it was totally fine. 24hr soak, put in pressure cooker and bring up to full pressure, turn heat off and check after at least 4-5hrs. If not split, bring up to pressure again, turn heat off, and leave overnight.

Got a litre soaking and I've dragged "the big pan" out the garage.
I've a sack I keeping an airtight container. I dont use kilos and kilos of the stuff so this has lasted me 1 to 2 seasons. I noticed some cobweb type matter around the edges of the container. Anyway I have noticed over recent boiling and in the cobwebs small caterpillars. Is this a common pest within the seed? Boils and splits as it should, smells like it should. Just have a few dead (very small) caterpillars.
