Old bait

Hi guys , quick question , I have been using a combination of hemp and pigeon conditioner its kept in a bucket covered in water with lid on , after a few weeks it starts to smell a little , have always used fresh bait but am still using this stuff , know that carp anglers use similar mixes and let them go rancid , what are peoples thoughts on this ?

I freeze my unused bait for the next session, hemp, meat, damp pellets, caster, maggots, ground bait etc.

That said, I try and use what I take and not have any left but it never seems to work out that way.

As long as there's no maggot, caster or meat in the mix I let it "ferment" I think it works very well.

Just don't leave it any where near the dog - mine was pretty well fermented and came back today to collect for tonights session to find that the lab had scaled a small platform & had a nibble. Found that & her breakfast in a small pile not far away. There's another thought, predigested dog particle...

Cheers guys aint got freezer room for the particles so its left to ferment and not had much of a problem but thought would ask ,

Rob, I guess the articles in the angling press by Fred.J.Taylor were before your time, so you probably never read them. One of those was about a carp lake in America (or was it Canada?...he used to fish in both countries a lot) Anyway, apparently there were large tubs/barrels of maize/corn steeping in water dotted around the complex, and the rules of the fishery were that each time you passed a tub, you reached in, grabbed a handful of maize/corn and threw it in the lake.

The problem was that these barrels never got to be empty, because they were kept regularly topped up. Consequently, some of the contents (the bottom of the barrel, literally :p) were so old, possibly months or even more  that they were puke makingly rancid. According to Fred, once you had fished there for a day, it took you a week to get rid of the smell from your hands.

Odd thing was, the fish loved it :(...........there is just no accounting for taste :p

Cheers, Dave.

just been reading the above posts, interesting ????, we all think that fresh baits are the best, yet carp love rancid hemp mixes, just wondered as i have never used smelly hemp,
i have always binned it for fresh, , just a thought,

rancid

it was canada david you were right ,ive used old hemp once or twice but prefer fresh only because of the stench, its bad enough fishing with a wiganeer:eek:

Mark, I can well imagine your suffering. I think it was Einstein who said the circumference of pie + a wiganeer = deep sh*t :p:p

On the bait front....I once fished a well known carp complex in France where you were not allowed to take your own particles, but they did supply their own on site if required . The problem was that the cooked hemp was kept in a deep, frequently topped up vat...as in the barrels in Canada....and again like Canada, the result was a putrid stench. I was assured by the on site bailiffs that it worked fine, and in fact I used some of it and caught...but trying to rid my hands of the reek of rancid hemp took some doing

Cheers, Dave.
