New Year Resolution

I'm not a big fan of New Year Resolutions as my ones only last a few weeks! However, I am determined to try a fishing-related one for 2023 and that is to ditch the unnecessary gear I tend to take with me.
For 2023 I intend to go fishing with just the gear I need for that session. No "back-up" rod & reel (never needed them anyway) No extra bags of feed (just in case!) and no over duplicated terminal tackle items!
Let's see if I can fish a full session without stressing about not having enough gear! 🤔

Yes Paul. Similar to you.
As age progresses it makes it worse.

I did split my bags into
Float/feeder.
Fly
Predator

But they have just got more full!


Just weighed my float/feeder. 39lb. Adding in rods, chair, bait etc probably humping a bag of spuds around.....just in case

My point exactly. I am in my 70's now and have trouble lugging myself around without all the gear as well!! 😂

I reached the same conclusion about five years ago and now take rod, landing net and a waistcoat of terminal items plus light weight scales. I don’t even take a chair these days preferring to cover many swims and never spending more than 15 to 20 minutes before moving on. I never loose feed anymore and only fish large traditional baits such as cheese and meat. Guess what, my catch rate doubled from the old bait and wait days and has included my barb pb at 15 - 5. I've got my total tackle down to about 30-35lbs now, and for 2023 I've resolved/decided to only ever use one rod, and go back 'to my roots' and fish the Teme much more next year, roving style. I'll see any sessions on the Middle Severn as 'rest days', and I don't think I'll be fishing the Lower Severn much, if ever, again. I've got a gorgeous pair of Free Spirit 'Big Waters' rods, that Bob Gill kindly made for me during lockdown days, that have only seen 4 hours on the bank. So that should be telling me something. So for 2023 I'll be minimising and rationalising my tackle even more.

Terry. Apart from Trent trips.
I reckon I fished for barbel about 8 times all Season LS WA and Wye.

Been put off one of the LS sections because of nutter allowed to join, the other club just fished for Zander. Probably just keep BA for LS Zander.

So I'll also be looking at the amount of tackle I have, and the stuff I put into my bags.

Hi men ,

Not a resolution, but I will try and get sue back on the rivers after a long break . I have a cunning plan to get her on the Severn and Teme , and see how it goes .

She is coming to France on one of my trips , taking the dog as well so will see if I can drop on a river for a day as well .

Good luck with that Mark, been too long. Teme is doing the odd Barbel, as is you know where.
 
Hi Sean,
I hope I'm right in thinking that i checked your permit whilst you was fishing on the Dorset Stour at Throop, if that was the case perhaps once you have sorted out all your gear that is all over the place then find a good place to keep your car keys and permits, there was a big struggle trying to find them.
So if it was you that i checked on Throop, it was nice to meet you and a Happy New Year.
If it wasn't you i liked your post anyway.

It's a constant thing for me in reducing tackle burden. I bought a couple of lightweight chairs recommended on here, one for me one for son. I use a Drennan specialist net bag for carrying chair and bits, the rod is topped and tailed with protectors and the Drennan pole lashed to these. Bucket for bait etc, and a fold down Wychwood net completes svelt look💃

After being on a knife edge 22 months ago when they told me recently no one thought I would last the week back then
I am now now disabled with permanent spinal damage and will be on chemo for the remainder of my life BUT BIG SMILE almost ready to be able to get out

and my new years resolution is to make the 150 mile drive to the mighty Trent and fish a 48 hour session and I wont care a jot if I blank either :cool: to me Fishing has always been more than just catching I love the peace and quiet and my surroundings I have met a few fantastic people the wonderful Northern hospitality is alive and well thank god :cool:
