New rods wanted. C3’s vs basis vs mark tunleys dark carbons any info on these 3 please pros and cons.

I bought them during Covid so couldn’t get to see any, not that anywhere nearby had them. Went off what was said on here and the fact that there were Daiwa’s top barbel rod. Took a gamble, but it paid off. Probably get what I paid for them, or close to it if I was to sell now.

I’ve fished the middle Trent when there’s been a bit on, and they’d get 8oz and a mesh bag of pellets to the middle ok. Probably further if I’d tried.
Brilliant thank you mate if I end up fishing tidal more will get some 2.75 if I like the 2.25.

To be honest I can never see why such concerns over very expensive carbon is that much better than any off the shelf rods, especially when chucking heavy leads into big rivers such as the Severn or Trent?
Sure I get the reasons why big money is spent on float rods where balance and action is paramount.
Genuinely interested if anyone could put me right, because I am a sucker for the recommendations on here, so before I bin my old Drennan's and empty my bank account in favour of Mr Tunley, is it all worth it ?🤔

No, honestly, there's no reason to spend that much on a rod, even though I did do it, I still say no. I did it because I am a tackle tart and want to please myself; it wont catch you more fish.

😆 me too. I have both the 2.75 and 2.25 Basias and personally no Custom rod blank gets near them. The eyes are single legs and they are imo very good and haven't bent one so far, tip rings I have changed for anti fraps but not on the 2.25lb and now I don't see that as a problem at all. I bought mine second hand and got a good deal. They are pricey, but, if your disappointed, someone will take them off you very quickly. As for which one, the 2.25 as expected is a little softer than the 2.75, if I had a choice I'd go 2.75 for the Trent and 2.25 for any smaller river.

I'd counter what people have said here in that if you feel better on the bank with nice rod/s you tend to have more confidence and fish better. That should give better results so I agree you could catch with a cheaper rod and if that is what you want then good for you. We all like nice stuff to play with whether that be rods, reels, feeders or even hooklengths.
It's all part of the game but you need to be confident the rig you cast out will work, it's not tangled, and the bait you're presenting might tempt a fish or two. That's all we hope for.

I have a pair of cheap Korum 13ft 2.5Ibs big water rods I get out on the odd occasion I’m fishing the Trent/severn in a raging flood and need to chuck out 6oz plus…at £45 each I’m not worried about them and they do the job of getting the fish in quickly, tbh I don’t enjoy the scrap of a barbel in floodwater so for me an expensive blank would be wasted in these specific conditions. At all other times/conditions using weights up to 6oz I will use my Harrison’s (Ipowers or insights) and enjoy the experience more.

It's then just a state of mind not the state of your tackle that counts? I agree there should be no compromise with reels line end tackle, but really a 12ft a rod such as a 2lb t.c Korum is perfectly adequate and for me rather liberating the the cost is c.£100 as opposed to £400.
If I happened to step on the thing I wouldn't feel quite so bad too, for me that would encourage me to fish harder.
A off the peg rod will catch as much or as little as a custom it certainly will deliver the rig as effectively.
Personally I enjoy catching on old rods especially, they have character, a life, a story to tell, and believe me I have a lot of them🙂
I suppose I get why carp anglers to an extent pay more for their rods, especially if they need to cast distances, because that is where the difference is between us and them .
Don't get me wrong, I love my Torrix, but it was second hand, unwanted, Trev was his name, the previous owner, and he had the rod named after him, 'Trev' and I are inseparable, and we have had some great adventures, and a few doubles along the way.
Priceless.

OP - there’s your answer
If I was going to fish the Trent a lot I’d take advice from someone like Jon

Thanks for all input from you all! I’m originally from a carping background and the higher end rods did pay to have in my opinion from casting to playing fish etc plus everyone likes a good looking rod too. So I’m happy to pay more for hopefully something that will deliver a better product to use and serve me well. . Not so familiar with the barbel rods but like most things sometimes you pay for what you get. I don’t go out boozing etc so spending a bit on rods is ok with me it’s something to keep not piss up the wall if you get what I mean. But yes you don’t need expensive rods etc and doesn’t mean you’ll catch more either having them either it’s each to their own isn’t it.

Thanks mate. Do you not think the 2.25 will do for the Trent then having used them both? How stiff are the 2.75? Was more looking at the 2.25 as would use for tench in the closed season too? I’ve got some armalite mk3 for smaller rivers derwent soar etc.

I've got my pair of custom 2lb Torrix and my pair of 2.25 C3's

If I was going back to fish the Trent again around Fiskerton area I would buy the Powermesh 2.25, cheap enough to get grubby, and possibly the 2.75 for the tidal. The 2 25s will cast out 5oz no problem

Great value rods that'll do the job with progressive playing action.

Yeah I’ll mainly be Fiskerton and then Notts area don’t want something too stiff so can enjoy the fight etc still? Then later on if I like the 2.25 I’ll look out for a pair of 2.75 for tidal trips if they happen as never fished the tidal yet.

Where you from, Niall ?? If you fish the Derwent and the Soar, you're pretty close to me in Leicestershire. If we could arrange it, you could have a gander at my Basia's.
