New rods for new season

Craig Shildrick

Senior Member
I bought a grauvell specialist ht rod last year after a recommendation from one of the lads on here. I've got nothing but praise for the rod, being honest I haven't caught that many fish on it but I've had a few and it's been good to use and looks a lot more expensive that it actually was. With the new season approaching I'm looking at my gear and thinking should I just get another grauvell for a pair, or for £150-200 will I find a pair of Rods that i see a noticeable difference in? I'm also using an okuma interceptor pro which I love for the money and will probably go for another to pair up.

To cut a "very" long story short, has anyone got any thoughts on what's better and what is simply more expensive?( in my price range)

Cheers

Craig

I'm quite fond of the korum neoteric twin tips. 1.75 and 2.2 tops that will cover most situations and they will bend right through to the butt if necessary .Managed to stop a 15lb carp dead in its tracks in pitch blackness on the 1.75 top last year. Think they should fit right in your price range as well.

Rods

Hi Craig,
All of the above rods are spot on, if you have a budget of £150-200, try getting a harrison blank based single rod-Yately Angling Centre do a good no thrills harrison at £170 I think, and then the rods on this site start at £200, its a lot of money-but worth it if you fish tight venues and need to stop fish quickly. Ebay is worth a look, there is always a harrison or two advertised-think there are a pair at the moment, a few years old, but worth a look-try putting a thread in wanted-might be able to get what you want there.

Cheers DT

Craig, Just received a pair of Wychwood Rogue barbel rods, 1.75lb test, yesterday. Not tried them out yet but purchased after a number of recommendations. They feel smashing, more than i expected for £55 each. Looking forward to putting them to use.

Craig if your happy with the Grauvell why not just make a pair by getiing another. If you go buying new rods you might not be so happy with them.
What I would do with the money is get another Grauvell rod and upgrade the reels to a pair of Okuma epix pro's.( I've just been doing a search for the epix pro and it looks like its been replaced with another model but I'm sure some one will be able to tell you what it is)
Although the Interceptors are a decent reel you will notice the differance between the two with much better gearing and clutch

JK should have some Grauvell in Bicester, mind you that was a little while ago...what I have heard they are a good rod...and you have a shiny pair...tart!

As Stephen mentions if anything upgrade the reels, my brother has them and they are great value, however he has upgraded to s/h Shimano GTEC's now and he notices the difference and he is a neanderthal.

Thanx for the advice lads, been talking to a lad I know who has just bought a pair of the korum rods, he's been raving about them. Think I'll prob look for another grauvell rod tho, what a bargain they are for the money, I only paid 27 quid for my last one and it was brand new!

What size okuma would you recommend, my interceptor is a 30.

Cheers

Grauvell stuff is pretty good. I believe that import of their products ceased some years ago. I don't know if this is still the case? Their reels had a very good reputation and were very reasonably priced. IMO the design of one of Grauvell's landing nets is still one of the best.

Once again Craig if your happy with the 30 size stick with it. When I used Okuma's I used the 40 size but have an Epix Pro 30 on my chub rod.
Is your Intercepter the blue one. I'll be putting one on ebay later today and thats a 30 only used a couple of times and the only thing wrong with it is the spare spool has two very small niks on the rim because I dropped it whilst taking the photos for ebay. I dont think this makes any diferance .
Any way this is not a sales pitch If your interested get in touch because it is going on ebay today. better to email me at scaz47@yahoo.co.uk

There's a new version Okuma Interceptor Limited Edition Baitfeeder Reel in black and only £30 from some outlets gotta be worth a punt.

I've been on the search for an epix pro equivalent for a while. The interceptor has always been a decent reel for the price, but i just didnt like the looks. That new black version seems nicer - if i hadnt have just bought a couple of reels i may have gone for that.

Have recently bought Sonic SKSs and rate them above the Drennan barbel rods which I hated ( personal preferences and all that). Got the tritip versions from chapmans.

Rods are very personal. I'd go with what you like!
