Hi all, appreciate this probably comes up every other week! But im new to barbel fishing, have a rovex john wilson barbel quiver and i am looking for a new rod. I usually fish the Tees and Swale and was looking at the fox duo lite with the 1.75lb and 2lb top. On offer for £60 at climax tackle. Any advice appreciated.

cheers Craig

Check again before you pin your hopes on that. The Duo-Lite doesn't come with two different rated avon tips for a start. Secondly, the only Duo-Lite that they sold off that cheaply was the 0.5 lb TC Specialist.

I suspect that you are looking at this. When you click on the banners and look deeper you'll find that most of the various Duo-Lites have either sold out or are a higher price than the stated £59.99

or the grauvell ht 1.75tc comes with avon top and 3 quivers. very nice rods for the money-around £69.99. I really recommend this rod for your budget, its what I started with.
nice slim blank and cork handle.

I dont really like to spend to much chris as i honestly dont think im a good enough angler yet to notice the difference. I was told the Korum rods where good but they are around double the price of the wychwood's. Are they twice as good? I dont mind paying for quality as i believe you get what you pay for but there does seem to be some similarly good rods around at different prices.

My mate has the Wychwood Rogues and they are nice enough and do the job perfectly well. I have (amongst a lot of others:eek:) the Korum Twin Tips. The Twin Tips are better imho and that extra 2.2lb top adds a good degree of versatility should you end up on a bigger river or fishing in flood conditions.

I also owned a wychwood 1.75, and while they are nice rods for the money, they sort of limit your fishing somewhat.
They are really only meant for leaving on the rod rest due to the 12ft and the weight of them.
whereas for the same money you can get something like the grauvell which can be used for rolling, touch legering, legering. anything really and at 11ft and light, is comfortable to hold all day.

Hi Craig,

All good advice above and Wychwood barbel gear is very good, however have you been around the tackle shops and handled any rods yet?

The best way to get a feel for what you want is to have a waggle and proper good look before spending any money. It's worth the wait to find exactly what you want. If you buy without seeing and are not entirely happy then you've wasted 60 odd quid.

There must be some lads on here that fish near to you and I'm sure they would let you have a look at their rods to give you an idea of what it is you are after, remembering the various test curves and playing ations can vary from rod to rod and manufacturer.

Some prefer through actions, others progressive etc. The good thing is there is a world of choice out there so take your time and happy hunting.

Regards

Tommo

Go on E bay and look for a 2nd hand Harrison , you can pick up a good one for around £80-£100 , worth it in the long run.Just looked there is a Harrison ''Hi design Sulis ' on at the moment 1.75 TC + quiver section ,ideal for you . I have had one of these for years , lovely rod

Look on fishtec at the TFG Nanotec and Classic barbel rods.

If you want cheap then check out Shakespeare mach1 xt specialist rods, not specificly barbel rods&only 1 top but not bad for the cash.Daiwa do some cheaper barbel rods,I've got 2 Daiwa Proteus barbel rods, they are decent as well.

Thanx for all the advice lads, after being told about the grauvell specialist i seen one on e-bay and stuck a bid in and just got it for £26:D

Im assuming Neil, states in advert its an unused grauvell and shows pic with the black slim blank. Paying with paypal so covered if somebody has been telling porkies! Bloke has good feedback tho and has sold bits of Grauvell gear before so fingers crossed.

I use a greys prodigy rod. Its got two tips. A 1.5lb test curve and a
2lb test curve. Very nice when handling barbel
Also gud with heavy lead casting.
