New reel recommendations

So I am fishing the Trent with a pair of 2.75 powermesh rods casting 5oz+ leads and want a decent pair of baitrunner reels
I was considering shimano 6000 or 8000 oc reels is there much difference between them ?
Will the 6000 do or should I go for the 8000?
Or is there something else I should consider

Sure its just the spool capacity that's different Ray, between to the 6 and 8000, the body is identical. We will soon find out that's for 👍. If correct 6000 will be fine..most places you only need 60yds on max.

I believe they're the exact same reel body but the 8000 has a deeper spool. So I'd go for more line capacity and get the 8000.

I could be wrong though!!

🤷‍♂️

I use 6000 x areo's on my 2.75lbs Daiwas. I've since swapped the handles over to singles. I know they're not everyones cup of tea, but I like them.

Hi ray go for Shimano 8000oc
that's what I used by the way 6000oc is same size as 8000oc only difference is more line capacity on8000oc.peter

Thanks Peter but I see 6000 are 140yds and 8000 are 240yds capacity and later is 45g heavier so there is no difference apart from that then?
By the way I am living the powermesh rods I bought from you

The 8000 is fractionally bigger. The handle arm is thicker too hence the weight difference between them.
There isn’t much in it but identical they ain’t.

I’m
Ray go castizum Br if budget allows.
Better in every way for what you want.
Lighter, more leverage, casts much better, drag is filled with quality plates and zero bling.
they should be for the price not sure I would pay that for a reel when I could buy two 8000 of for virtually the same price as 1 reel

Ray,
You ask two main questions, will the 6000 do or should you go for the 8000 Shimano OC. You’ve read the facts about dimensions and line capacity but also consider that the 8000 weighs nearly two ounces more that the 6000 so will it feel balanced on your rod? Another question to ask yourself is do I really need a reel that takes 230metres of .40mm line. .40mm is 20lb BS (or there abouts) so if you use either .33 or .35mm (12/15lb line) you simply don’t need the capacity. The other question you ask is what else to consider. I’m loathed to get into “my reels the best reel” argument because that a personal thing and purely subjective but for the record I use an Okuma reel on my Trent rods but I’m not fishing it 2-3 times a week in fact I only get to the Trent about 8-10 times a SEASON because of where I live. The smaller Shimano 4000 OC is my favoured reel on the rods I use on The Middle Severn, The Wye, The Medway and in the past The Kennet. As you start by asking about the Shimano models you are probably a Shimano man so I would say go for the 6000 but the spools will still need backing out or else you will have much line that won’t see water! See attached for data taken from the Shimano website.

Yes I do use 4000d’s when I fish the nene on my lighter rods but I wouldn’t put them through the punishment of bigger weights

Totally agree Ray the 4000’s are not the reel for the Trent 👍

6000 and 8000 The gear ratio is the same the spools are interchangable

I have some Shimano 6000 XTEA and some Shimano 8000 XTEA and take the spools off and I cant see any difference at all

and they are perfection on my 2.75 powermesh rods and on my Harrison Barbel rods

I have 6000 and 8000oc
I think the 8000c would Balance better with that rod but all personal preference
I use 6000OC on C3s for flood/ big river barbel
8000OC on river pike rods - typically 2.5- 2.75tc and smaller baits
Whichever you choose they are a brilliant reel
Was using 4000s yesterday and had a really good day and both reels faultless
Clutches out of the box are faultless
