New PB

Well it looks like the tactics discussed in my thread were correct! Out on the river tonight, baited up 4 spots, an went an fished a 5th till it got dark, to let the baited areas settle with no rigs in. 45 mins in each swim, first three produce one cray, swim four a 5lb chub. Saved my fav till last. First cast, not a twitch, which was odd as its normally lots of crays. Last cast of the night, at the tail of the swim, a small tremble, then the tip just went round and didn't stop. After a hairy fight, a new PB of 14.12 was resting in the net! Absolutely buzzing!

Thanks chaps. Photos aren't great as they were self takes in the rain! Not that that really matters. Not sure if I'm going to be hurrying back, as I've been told that there's less than 5/6 in the 1/2 mile or so stretch, and by all accounts that's the biggest. Maybe end of the season?

Nice one great result.

Congratulations Robert, what a super result!

Don't believe everything you're told about fish populations. I was told be someone once that '...there are only 20 barbel in the whole stretch'. I didn't tell them that I'd seen more than 20 in one swim!

Cheers,
Andy F

Cheers fellas. Kevin I aggree with you there, it probably isn't the fish that it was a couple of years ago. But on the flip side from what i can see, how big a barbel has to be before it turns heads, has a lot to do from the river/stretch from which it was taken. And then take into consideration the time of the year. Barbel sizes seem to be going the same way as carp IMO, in as much as there are fewer HUGE fish, but many more BIG fish, if that makes sense. Heres a pic anyway, Very long fish, would love to find her again at the back end of the season!

Very well done, that buzzing feeling does not come along nearly enough, does it?

Might be an idea to take little notice of statements of how many and how big fish are in a given section.

If you listen and don't go back, you will never be able to prove the rumours to be wrong.

It is always worth remembering that anglers are rarely as clever as they think they are.

What's wrong with the pic? Its a great self take! And as for the barbel, what a stunner!
Looks like a defiant one too, proudly displaying it's dorsal fin, Isn't it great when they do that!

Congratulations on the superb catch.

Defiant isn't the word Jack! It tore off downstream, had to totally clamp donm on the pin, followed it downstream, as it was trying to get in the marginal snags, it some how rolled over the line and got wrapped up, it then swung out to mid flow and i had to coax it to the net half sideways! dont think it really knew what was going on, but it went absolutly nuts when i netted it. One angry mother!
