New John Baker video

Ok so maybe a really daft question. If John isn't a fan of pellets, when Barbel fishing, is he feeding any free offerings or just fishing single hook baits? Barbel videos always seem to show heavy feeding either with pellets or a ground bait approach.

Maybe just throwing out a few boilies into the swim?

And then when it comes to paste, I've only tried it once, some ready made Dynamite baits stuff but found it came off as soon as my bait hit the water. Is home made stuff tougher or did I just do something wrong?

Heavy feeding isn't the answer if you've only got one or two fish in your swim . As for paste , John makes his own snd you can vary how it breaks down in the water . You want it to breakdown and break off your bait slowly causing leakage and a scent trail .

😎👍👍

Shelf life pastes don't seem to have the same bindind/moulding qualities of normal fresh, egg made paste. The shelf life pastes I've used have been useless for river fishing situations and seem to be brittle and dry.

Yes bang on Stu .. I always make my own with a bag of base mix . That way I can add what I want and make it to a consistency I desire . .. not that I catch many barbel 😂

Ok so next daft question, especially the length of time I've been fishing now

I see JB does the base mix and then the hook bait base mix. So does that mean if I buy a bag of off the shelf boilies (source for example) then those were meant to be the feed and hook baits should be the separate hardened hook bait tubs you can buy? Or are those hardened hook baits designed more for the carpers leaving baits out in the water.

I'm going to have a go at making my own baits so can I just buy the regular base mix from JB or do I need the hook bait base mix?

With regards feeding, I have been wondering if I have been wasting money buying pellets and all these branded ground baits for the small Warwickshire Avon and should just fish single hook baits with maybe a few boilies thrown in as a little feed? Especially as I'm trying to fish a few different swims each time I go out to see if I can find the fish rather than sit in one spot.

only use freezer bait personally .. but buy hard hookbaits in the range I'm using (currently pro flo baitworks) I do this as it stops chub pulling a soft bait off the hair .

Buy a matching base mix to go with what ever hook bait you are using . You don't need a hard hookbait mix to make a paste wrap .
Then just make a one egg mix ...
one egg
Base mix
Liquids in small amounts
A spot of hemp oil I often add if using the paste in cooler water . Also keeps the paste workable .

Loads of vids online on making paste .. you can then custom your paste both in texture and attraction .😎👍

I use a pva bag slid down the hook length . Wrap the hook bait in paste at times . Then I'll feed a bit of hemp over the area im fishing as an attractor ..

Can testify that shelf life paste is cack. I bought some Sticky bloodworm a few weeks ago and it's just worthy of the bin, so that's where it went. Best paste to buy is Ccmoores frozen paste blocks, that tip top stuff. Funny story, I actually bought some John Bakers base mix and flavours and because I'm a bit of an oaf I spilt the Search 4 bottle over the garden table and chairs so I'm even banned from making it in the garden! So I buy the CC Moores stuff 🙂

100% agree Barry, if the Barbel are not in any numbers and not competitively feeding then feeding large amounts of any feed is counter productive.
We are increasing searching out solitary fish where perhaps a single bait surrounded by a small package of feed is better. This is why pva is so important to me.
A paste wrap or I prefer a lump of garlic meat.

Ok so I want to make some of my own baits from JB so what should I buy?

If I went with F2 just for example, can't I just buy the base mix and make everything, including hook baits from that? Or have I got to buy the separate hook bait mix also?

I don't think you do. I invested in the base mixes and flavours only. I like the seed bits in the bait but I have on occasion sieved the base mix for my hook baits and thrown the bits back in the main mix. Think the hook bait has some harder in it if you're wanting to leave a bait out for hours, which I don't. One thing I am becoming aware of is a change in the scent from a flavour and stupidly/or naively bought a few flavours thinking they would last forever but I think I saw a video saying upto 2 years?
I fish the yorkshire rivers and although I have had success on the bioshelfish baits I can't seem to get them interested in a taste f2 bait. That been said with it been a protein based bait I am weary of over feeding so probably aren't giving the fish enough to recognise it. I need to get my head round a campaign and feed a venue /swim to really test it properly but I like to vary my venues and with a 25 mile one way trip to most venues I don't have the luxury of prebaiting.
Also too many flavours results in a lot of frozen bait in the freezer that I'm not using.
Anyone got any tried and rested methods with the f2?
What I do find is you always get a prompt response to any email questions from either John( or his team).

Email John direct Mark ... he will tell you exactly what you need . He's really good like that and an absolute wealth of bait Knowledge .
Thanks to him I now make the perfect floater cake for chub fishing 😎👍👍

There are a whole host of vlogs that John has done regarding bait making, just have a peruse through them and you will find all the answers you need.
