Hi all,

Just a quick note to congratulate John Turner as his Anker fish of 15lb 10oz has just been accepted as the new record of the river.

Excellent fish well done!

Yes a big thumbs up John well done.......

Well done, a similar or possibly same fish was caught by an angler on a pole set up a few seasons back, it's a small River so I would wonder how many such Barbel if many is the right word, such a river would have.
Small river big barbel are a special treat.

Who accepts fish as a river record these days? TBF to Tony the fish does look shy of 15lb but that's just the way it goes sometimes. The pic of my PB is poor due to the angle so I guess you have to trust the angler in question. For me, I couldn't lie as it would always be nagging away. Anyhow, catching a double from the Anker is an achievement in itself so well done to the angler.

I'm pretty sure a good photo and a witness are all that's required. I think there's more info on the River Records page.

Yes, all this picture really represents is a clear photo of a barbel. It doesn't look anywhere approaching 15lb to me either. I guess we need to take the river records which a pinch of sodium chloride.

As has been remarked , a clear photo AND a witness are required for a fish to be considered for a record . Isn't that enough to avoid the pinch of salt ?

It depends if it's a witness to the weighing i guess. I'm no longer astounded by the mistakes made during the "weighing process".

If it was a dog walker it hardly proves anything, does it?

Fair point Graham . Although I have never gone through whatever process is required to claim a river record I was working on the presumption that the witness had to have seen the weighing process . Be interesting to know for sure what is required . Any current or former RR holders able to enlighten us ?

Just got back from being away so just catching up.

The captor (John Turner) has held the record before, as did Phil Smith straight after him. The same fish I believe. Just goes to show how a photo can be deceiving...

Rob Swindells is now handling the record claims in Dave's absence. He has support from Ray Walton as well I believe.

Claims go through more scrutiny these days than ever before I'm pleased to say. There was a time when you'd appear on the records list if you'd sent the picture into AM or AT with a note saying 'this is the new record'. Ever since Dave/Rob took on the verifications, the process has been much more thorough.

Other than killing the fish and taking it straight to Weights and Measures for official weighing, there will always be scope for dishonesty. As an angling group, we're lucky that there are some people willing to go through the ball-ache of contacting captors and witnesses to keep the integrity of a river records list as strong as possible.

Cheers,

Andy F
