Multipliers for barbel.

I've been sorting my garage out today and found a box with a couple of old Mitchell 624 multipliers in it and it struck me that with its great clutch, freespool and loud ratchet a small version of that reel would be a great barbel or carp reel, the only downside is they are a bit difficult for a beginner to cast, Has anyone tried one?

I'm pretty sure Bob Gill has in the past.

I've seen them being used on the river Lugg. The anglers were very successful too, taking away with them several 1/2 full carrier bags of small grayling and some decent sized chub.

Posted the same question about 5 years ago ,on account of having quite a few myself ( beach angler ) Did not get any positive replies, but always meant to try one, never got around to it though.I will stick with my fixed spools I think.

Had some bloke years ago jump in a hole right next to me at eastham, even though rest of river was free,he had a beachcaster, multiplier and what looked like 30lb line after a few casts the fish must have thought world war 3 had started, didnt get a bite for nxt couple of hours so packed it in thx to this joker.

I seem to remember reading a fairly recent article by John ''Wizzo'' Wilson , extolling the use of multipliers for barbel fishing , can't for the life of me remember where I saw it though , possibly in the Angling Times ?

Yes, something I just had to try. Used an ABU 6000C and an old Daiwa Millionaire 6HM.
Caught a couple, but went back to fixed spool as was awkward with the retrieve rate and using the rod 'upside down'.
Always preferred multipliers to fixed spools for beach fishing, where for me the ABU 7000 was nice - red colour was different as well. Still got it and in good nick as well from the 70's.

Ade - think the Mitchell 624 was intended as a small boat reel and 602 and 602AP were the beach jobbies. Got a 602 and 602 AP somewhere......

Cheers
Bob

The only barbus I have caught on a multiplier is Barbus Tor, ABU 10000 loaded with 40lb Big Game!

Its a great feeling ehh Steve.

They are my old boat reels Bob, I used to use them when I was tope fishing every week a few years ago.
If I was going to use a multiplier for barbel it would probably be a slosh 20 or something similar.

Strange that Mr Crabtree preferred to use a multiplier rather than a centrepin for carp fishing. That lovely old scream of the ratchet wasn't for him. Good job that fixed-spools weren't available, he might have been tempted by one of those new fangled contraptions. How things have moved on!
