mosquito repellant

i appreciate this may be a bit of a daft threas but after spending a fair few hours on the bank and been bit more than 50 times by mosquitos so far im on the look out for a good repellant with so many out there and so many that are apauling repellants i was just wondering what repellants you use preferably one that lasts quite a while (8 hours) the ones iv tried have worked for a couple of hours but iv still managed to be bit can anyone recommend a good one regardless of price?
thanks

If you'd have asked me this last week I would wholeheartedly have recommended Avon Skin So Soft in Woodland Fresh flavour. Little wife and I have used it in Cyprus and in the UK for about five years and never once been bitten by mozzies or midges. We have given loads of bottles away to friends and they have subsequently kept on using it to good effect.

What has changed my opinion? Last week we went camping to Marais-Poitevin in western France and were eaten alive by mozzies despite lathering SSS on twice a day. Maybe we got a bad batch or they have changed the recipe, but I've now bought some Avon Expedition Bug Spray that is also a Factor 15 sunscreen to try. At around £2.50 a bottle you could try the SSS Woodland Fresh and if it doesn't work it's not a great loss.

jungle formula half price in morrisons this week im sticking with avon sss for now

...as Tony said.

Or, if you hear of anyone going on holiday to Thailand, get them to bring some of the stuff they use. The deet content is higher than that which is allowed for sale in Europe. But it works.

cheers

After spending a week in the bug capital of the UK, Scotland, I am so glad that I found a bug repellant called SMIDGE.....it is really good, does not turn your lips numb, has a pleasant smell, and does what it says on the tin, I think I read about it somewhere on here on a similar post.

review below.

Cynical. Half the topics on the forum have been covered before. So what.

Is nobody capable of searching the forums anymore, this has been done to death.

I have to agree with Mike Paul, in fact i'd go higher and say nearly all !
Quite a few come out with this comment  all you have to do if the subject bores you is not open the thread just don't read it - simple !
If no one brought up old subjects, there would be no new input, and the forum would virtually grind to a halt mate ! every one would be searching old posts and no one talking :(

Ian.

I've said it before and I'll say it again.....

Citronella oil.

No nasty deet or other chemicals to risk getting onto your bait.
Fairly cheep and easily available from most good chemists.

Works for me.....

Steve

Steve, i'v only seen this in small 10ML bottles. How much do you need for it to be effective?

100% correct technology moves on everything is getting better for instance how many threads has there been "need new reels" nobody is going to read a thread from 3 years ago saying "need new reels" cos chances are the reels then arnt the reels today so well said Ian.
thanks to everyone for the replys i think il try the avon stuff and see how i get on with it

Isn't citronella oil derived from lemon grass? Wonder how effective crushed up lemon grass stalks rubbed on the old ankles would be!

My daughter was an Avon rep for a while, so i got got some Avon Skin so soft from her, and it did work but i found it lost its effectiveness after a few hours, so needing a fresh application, but i would say is the only effective non deet product to actually work, this year i've been given two types of repellant to try, and i swear they actually attracted the damn things ! and both times i had several bites.
For effective long term effectiveness IMO only products with deet in them actually work, the higher the content the better, but i'm aware of the warnings about deet being carcinogenic, so i rarely resort to using it.

Ian.

Edit .... I'm guilty of operating finger without putting brain into gear here :p

I should've said - but i would say is the only effective non deet product to actually work - THAT I'VE TRIED, because i've never tried citronella Oil, and many others so i couldn't speak for how effective they are, but i'm going to try it Steve - on your recomendation, at a venue that i reckon has got to be the worst in the country for mossies  i'll let you all know how it performs when i next go there.... if i can muster the courage to face them again, they're at plague levels at the moment, and i don't use the word lightly

Hmm yes I agree nearly every subject has been done before, so let me rephrase what I said.

I suggest you do a search because this subject came up less that 6 weeks ago, I'd be amazed if anything new has happened in the mosquito repellent industry in that time and some people took the time to put some rather useful information up in the last thread. Did you bother to look to see if there was anything recent that might be still be relevent?

Yes Yes Paul,
but it's still just chat, people like to chat, and it's what the forum is about, if you don't want to don't, it's not obligatory just don't open the thread, i can't see why it annoys you that other people want to, no matter how often, or recently it been discussed.

Regards
Ian.

I arrived at the river last week to do a night and was immediately surrounded by little black buggars which got in my eyes and ears. They weren't mozzies nor midges, somewhere in between size wise, and they didn't appear to actually bite. Anyroadup, I proceeded to set up, and when done I got a Tesco scented baby wipe out to clean my hands and the little black buggars all disappeared, and after washing myself down with a couple of these wipes I had no more trouble from them. It may have been a coincidence and I try the same trick again next time I'm out to try and prove the theory.
