Mono Hooklength

Hi All
When clear water Barbel fishing which mono hooklength do you find best for the job.:)
Had a few break on me in the last few season :( so just getting some feedback from you all who use mono.
Any help would be great and have a good new season.
 
just use clear mono like gr60 or you could give hydroflo a chance.

Use fluoro in clear water conditions. Try the frog hair at 11.5 lb - lovely supple stuff - though not cheap(its 100% fluoro as opposed to coated) 5 turn grinner knot jobs a good 'un. Use 10lb plus line - you shouldn't break off. DAIWA sensor is cheap and reliable-I use it in 12lb b.s same knot. Don't be afraid to use 4 or 5ft hooklinks in clear water

I'm another fan of long hooklinks in clear conditions but prefer a low diameter mono, my number 1 choice being Prestons Reflo Powerline in it's higher breaking strains ( 0.19mm or above ). Very thin, supple and tuff! I've tried a few others but keep going back to this stuff although the new Guru N-Gage line looks like it could be a good alternative.
 
I use Korda IQ in 10lb, and its not let me down yet. Although most of the time i use 10lb Berkley Big Game Clear on the venues i fish. I have tried lower diameter line for hooklinks,including reflo power line, but have lost fish. I don't really use finer diameters now unless float fishing.

I've been using the Reflo Powerline for my tench fishing during the close season and found it excellent, will be trying it for the barbel once the season starts. Knots well and very supple, also seems pretty strong as I've had several mid-double carp and a 20 on the 0.19 without any problems.
 
Must admit Steve the 0.19 seems perfect for me - i've used it for years on the Trent and more recently the very rocky Ribble without problems - suprisingly abrasion resistant for it's diameter - i mentioned the higher breaking strains in my previous post but tend to stick with this size! I use the 0.21mm when i need that extra reasurance but find the recently released 0.23 and 0.25 too stiff for my liking.

I should add i play my fish off the clutch - hard. I managed to put the brakes on 3 18lb+ river carp last season using the 0.21mm Powerline. Top stuff! ;)
 
Either Daiwa Sensor or Berkeley Trliene clear.
I fish a snaggy section of the upper Trent and I have found flouro awful. It's just not abrasive enough.

I use old faithful ultima powerplus. tough, sinks and is a nice dull, matt colour.

Incidentally, I've got on better with fluoro than with these hi-tech materials like reflo. That reflo powerline I couldn't stand, far too temperamental, and brittle

Reflo Power Line is the stuff I use for all my float fishing; I also use it for fishing the waggler and pole for Tench and floater fishing for Carp. I use it for both mainline (for use on my centre pins) and as a hooklength for other disciplines, the stated strength has always proved accurate, I have now used all the breaking strains from 0.07mm (1lb BS to 0.24mm (11lb BS).

It is a very good all round line for use as a hook length that has great durability, I have found the quality to be very consistent and it has proved to be rugged in situations where fish have fouled under water vegetation, as it does not break as easily or as quickly as other hi tech lines I have tried and it works equally well in both high and very low temperatures.

As with any line what an angler requires most is reliability and Reflo Power Line has proved this to me consistently over the last 3 seasons that I have used it.

Knot strength is very good, particularly with the loop and grinner knots and I find the colourless clarity to be a definite advantage, particularly when fishing hard popular venues or when I am fishing for clever finicky species like big Roach.

One last thing, I am not and have never been sponsored in any way by Preston Innovations, this is purely a recommendation from good experience.
 
FROG HAIR, not the Fluro one, but the tippet mono, comes on a green spool. Great tippet material for fly fishing and wonderful stuff for hooklengths. I use it beneath braid for float fishing usually 5X (around 5lb b/s) and 4X (around 6 1/2 lb b/s) with 6 lb and 8 lb braid respectively. Nearly as invisible as the Fluro, better knot strength and nearly as thin as braid. Very supple. Very expensive, but at least you can buy 30 M spools which can be carried around in a pocket making changing hook length strengths easy and quick.
I also tried some stuff this winter called Garbo Line, recommended by some local match anglers for pole fishing. A little cheaper than the Frog Hair, and seems much the same sort of stuff. Haven't tested it with Barbel yet (only used it on Chub and Grayling) so not really tested if its knot strength is as good as Frog Hair.
