Meat vs Halibut Pellet....

Ok, so, I fish a relatively lightly fished river and due to my success (or lack of) from a roving approach, I want to target one or two swims for a few sessions to see if there are any fish present. My predicament is feed hemp/4mm halibut pellets, but what to go with for hookbait? Would you guys plump for meat or 10mm Halibut pellet? Expected size of the barbel are 5-10lb, with the odd one pushing 12lb. Any help appreciated as its all about confidence this game isnt it, and at moment, I'm not very!

Thanks.

Why feed something different to your intended hookbait?

I'd feed Hemp with 8mm pellets and fish either hemp or 8mm pellets on the hair! Nothing wrong with feeding and fishing anything else minds - 10mm boilies, corn, meat . . .

YEah good point, I was debating fishing 2 or 3 of the 4mm pellet on the hair, but I guess my real question was to 'uneducated' fish, would you have confidence in the pellet over say meat?

Either - if the fish are unpressured they won't see anything as suspicious!

I've herd barbel anglers say of virgin stretches - " they won't take a pellet - they've never seen em " - Presuming someone has been baiting the swim with plumrose for the last few years!!!

I would also take into account the expected density of fish!! Personally, I fish a small river with not a great head of fish to target. So i bait up with halibut groundbait with a helping of smaller pellets and a sprinkle of 8mm but fish 10mm on hook!! Seems to work for me.

Hi,

I take it it's a small river??

Why not try corn, worms or maggots on maggot clips if there is not much pressure on the water???

Look more towards the natural baits maybe??

The river is a small river yes. However, i think the length i fish doesn't have a great amount of fish, hence the lack of anglers, but i do believe that when they do come out, they are bigger than the ones on other stretches (of which i do not have the rights to fish).

Im going to go with the suggestion of hemp and pellets and stick with it for a few sessions and see what it produces. Thanks for the replies.
