Maggots

I've not seen that piece before Mark, using poly boxes (presumably the ones the fishmongers use?) and ice packs/bottles seems like a good idea. Some good tips for casters as well.

Qute a few years back I worked on a maggot farm in Ireland for a bit. One of my jobs was to deliver maggots to England in a transit van.....without refrigeration :eek:

Used to take around 250 gallons at a time, the maggots were fridged right down put in bin liners, tied up and put in the polystyrene fish boxes, boxes taped up the a sheet of steel on each layer....journey took about 9 hrs start to stop. They could just make it before warming up.

Until the day customs pulled me, unloaded the van and made me show them what was in each box.

By the time I got too Manchester I had lost half of them....mainly in the cabin!

They used to use the boxes and blue freezer blocks/2litre frozen bottles to take the maggots to Denmark,by car and then ferry, 30 plus years ago for the Embassey final matches. The bait man in my local tackle shop,Steve worked in Middlesex angling centre owned by Keith Sellick who was Keith speer's best mate, i think the knowledge came through there

Thanks for the tips guy's I've really got back into my float fishing this season after a long gap and been buying pints of them also gonna be using them on a maggot clip on a running rig and trying various spices turmeric paprika etc added to them.

Personally I've never bothered using the maggot clips Dave, even the smallest and lightest of them seem a bit crude to me.

I just super glue them onto a hair it's easy enough. I use ESP hair braid, which is whipped under a knotless knot. I set the length of the hair at around 1.5" with the maggots (usually 4) glued further down at the usual distance from the bend of the hook. The extra length of the hair makes as you can hold it tight whilst glueing the maggots on. Size 11 or 12 Drennan Super Specialists Barbel seem to balance well.

As you know Mark, I also knew both Keiths very well, was at primary school with Speersy and knew Bubbles from a very young age. They were both Saturday boys in Fred Buller's shop Chubbs of Edgware. The Maggot supplier for Chubbs and Middlesex angling center was the stillwater trout nymph fishing legend Arthur Cove. I'll never forget the day Keith Sellick and I met him at Rutland in its opening season and he showed us 'the way'. I've been a keen fl y fisherman
ever since.
It's almost certain that the two Keiths gained their maggots knowledge from Mr Cove.

Well that brought the memories flooding back, I lived not far from Middlesex Angling Centre (MAC), Keith and Jim? used to sponsor our NFA team (H&H) lots of caster and maggots as well as team wear.
Shame about Keith I moved away and didn't hear about Savay until a few years later. Used to laugh about his boilies and additives!!!

Steves at Harefield Tackle now I believe.

Steve's at the fishermans cabin in South Ruislip John, and their bait is usually top quality.Everything mentioned in Keith Speer's caster piece is done exactly the same way.
