Maggot feeder - What hooklinks and hooks?

Pre stretched lines are designed for pole fishing were the elastic takes the pressure! I wouldnt use pre stretched line fishing a waggler never mind using it for barbel.
Prestons power line is by far the best line I have come across right through from 0.6 to 0.21. I'd also agree with not using a loop over about 0.16

my maggot feeder rigs are simple 12lb fluromainline attached to a swivel with a bead and a 10lb hooklink with same line size 14 animal hook

6-8lb line is too flimsy for barbel when you take the places they get to.1-5
rod for normal and not less than 10lb line.if they want it they will have it

Nowt wrong with the double figure of eight knot

To me there is Dave, i have tested knots to death over the years and as far as loop knots are concerned the bog standard double overhand loop is more (virtually 100%) reliable than the figure of eight.

I use the DO loop knot to test new spools of line before i will use them, i tie a loop on both ends and pull to destruction with an old set of scales, the line almost never goes at the knots.

I have tried and i just can't get that sort of reliability from figure of eight knots, they regularly fail. Maybe, to mis quote the sadly departed Frank Carson "Its the way i tie em" :)

Like I said, its more a question of where your fishing. It's not a concern if the area is snag free with a clean bottom.

I tried the same tactics with my normal bs line and size 12 hooks and the fish weren't having it, so if I feel its safe to use the lighter line and that is what was needed in the cold clear water conditions I will.

The mainline strength will be important as it must allow stretch to cushion the hooklength. The power of the rod for the same reason, and as Graham said, correct playing technique will be required.
I use Silstar when fishing for pressured fish with no problems.

Simon, no need to be sorry, just one of those things.

I have found that for flouro loops - which I constantly use, the double figure eight is the strongest knot and I now use it for all my loop knots.

When maggot/caster fishing and when you can allow the fish to run, I'm a big fan of Silstar Match Team hook lengths in 7.9lb and 10.01lb. Hook wise Superspades or Pallatrax.

As Tim and Neil say. Silstar Match team is excellent line. I use it mainly for trotting in the lighter bs and have used it for hooklinks for barbel as well.

i use Drennan Super Specalist 8lb for hooklenghts and 10lb Berkley Big Game mainline and Super Specialist hooks 12s & 14s and a Harrison Chimera No 2 for Maggot Feeder Fishing cannot recall losing a fish on the Wye

 some people . . .
may want to do some research into the 'actual existance' of 7lb 12oz powerline. Only messing gents, apologies to those riled.
