Lone Angler Trefor West Chub Rod

It's a great idea, and in fact my old roving Seer rods use to have them! And fitted tightly as they were better built!
I remember Jill telling me they had to outsource that part of the build to Bob 'the rod' up @ Birmingham Angling Centre or some such place to create the roving tips as they were tricky to get right. 👍
Bob 'the rod' (don't Google that unless you have a broad mind) has a few of these rings. He's on 0121 2470 8366 sine he went independent

Thanks to Nicholas Cole. I just this minute called Bob 'The Rod' Davis up. He's given me a few ideas to try which may help those of you that experience the same thing with this particular rod!

He did mention that the graphite would wear eventually as time goes by, hence why that roving tip don't bite anymore, for grip on the rod blank.

His suggestions were...

1. Black Spray paint little at a time to build the thickness needed.

2. Trim a little off the edge of the roving tip, so it's back to the taper needed to fit snugly again. (Hacksaw job) then lightly sanded to smooth off.

3. 240 wet/dry sandpaper. Placing the sandpaper down on flat surface and run the base of the roving ring over the sand paper little and often until you reach the desired fit of said ring. Then lightly bevelle the edges to finish the job.

Personally I'd do the 3rd option, but if you wanted to, I also like the idea from Alex Warren with a thin walled silicone sleeve fitted over the rod blank, then slide the tip over it for a snug fit.

Cheers guys for you input, you've been a big help! 😊👍

Isn't there something that pole anglers use when the sections of their poles become loose fitting?
Bob told me about this, but he said it never worked, and that it was a bit of a fallacy in his eyes. But enough people tried it over the yearsthinking it would solve the issues with their pole rods etc 😊👍

Personally I would go for the silicone tube idea first and see how that works. It won’t damage the rod, and will also add a bit protection to the joint section of the ring.

For those of you that have this particular rod & issue, It's been solved.

Simplicity in itself...

Get a length of fishing line & thread it into the roving tip. Slide on the roving tip. The line within it creates the bite needed to grip.

Not that that's acceptable for a Harrison built rod with the price tag that came with it. But it seems to be working.

I politely emailed Steve Harrison, for a reason why everyone I know that had purchased this rod, had this issue. Not that it will change anything. Still a great little rod! 🤣

Hi guys.

Managed to get my hands on one of these recently and had a few chevin on it. Lovely playing action & great fun to use!

The only issue I have with it, is the detachable 'Roving Ring'
It allows for a quick change quiver tip to be added & vice versa.

Upon using the roving tip, I struck at some bite indications.
The ones which didn't connect with the Chub, I noticed the removable tip would rotate around, which would allow for the rings to not be aligned, which to my mind is a poor design.

Martin James once wrote, that he'd recommend dispensing with the quiver tip section, and to superglue the roving tip in situ!

Is there any other ways of making the roving tip a tighter fit, rather than fixing it permanently?

I thought maybe a bit of melted candle wax smeared onto the end might work?

Julian 👍
My first true carbon barbel rod was a New Dawn. It too had a removeable tip ring, and came with a choice of two quiver tips that you could slip on.
Are New Dawn rod company still a thing?

With loose brass ferrules candle wax rubbed over the male joint was the remedy of choice. It also works on glass and carbon rods. You have to repeat the process periodically.

For a more permanent fix on carbon rods I would consider thinning down some resin used to bond fibreglass and applying two or three thin coats then rubbing it back with fine grade wire wool.

I am thinking to customise my next rod like this now, not sure if this is a good idea or get a quiver section instead…
Be interested in seeing what you get done buddy!
Give that Bob 'the rod' chap a call up @ angling direct Birmingham, he'll probably be your best bet these days! 👍
