Great post Ian, totally agree.

Dave, actually I'm just home from plumbing/depth finding local 'pond'. Lovely little place, feel totally 'at home' there. Comfortable has had a bad press of late!

Very true Terry :D:D:D

As a youngster you dash around all over the show, whipping your rod out at every opportunity...and as a result your tackle does collect it's share of problems. The upside of that is that you do have your share of memorable outings....and some stunning PB's.

However, once you are done with all the angst and frantic stuff , you settle down, happy and content with the pond you know. That could reasonably be called unadventurous, even boring....but at least you no longer have the expense of swim preparation and pre baiting...and you are assured it's free of crabs and suchlike. Happy days.

Cheers, Dave.

TOP post David, right proper tickled me :D

:) BFW at it's best!

I've also found that my PB is continually bettered, but I now some frown on repeat captures

Great read again Graham! Did she come out to your calling eventually? Or have you heard of her coming out since??

My mainline tends to be green (Bass Pro Excel), for no other reason than I’ve always used it; however when the Severn is low and clear, I often go down to a 5ft, 9lb BS Incognito Fluro hooklength and it does put more fish on the bank!

Thing is Neil....how do you decide whether it was the claimed invisibility of fluoro, rather than the the lengthening of the link or the lowering of the breaking strain....that brought about the increase in your catch rate?

Cheers, Dave

It’s just happened too many times, I always fish long hook lengths and especially when feeder fishing on the Severn and Wye in low and clear conditions. So say I’m fishing a 4ft Stripteaze hooklength with a 12’s hook and no bites; a switch to a 5 foot 9lb Fluro hooklengh and maybe also switch down to a 14’s hook and I start catching.

On other occasions where I prebait on my local river, it makes no difference, the fish are confidently on my feed and I expect to catch on coloured line/coated braid regardless.

Just back to the red light white light thing, I walk the dog along the river at night. On windy nights there's an owl that comes down for shelter and sits on a branch about head hight. The first time I saw it it spooked off my head torch and flew off. Spoke to my dad who said try red light it doesn't bother em! Next windy night down the same path I saw the owl on its spot so flicked my headlight to red, I was able to walk slowly upto the bird till I was face to face just a foot away, fantastic, it just kept tilting its head looking at me and never flew off!

no baring on the light thing Karl but the owl, Tawny or Barn Owl?

has any of you thought that it may be the trapped air bubbles on the line is what fish see, in sunlight it must look like a string of neon lights flashing, this is probably why the witching hour or nights produce more bites, no light equals no bright air bubbles glinting, howeveri am a strong beleiver in if the fish can see
your mainline apart from the last 3ft then all they do i swim around it rather than bump into it causing spooked reaction, its the last 3ft or so where see it or not problems begin and i think colour has little to do with it, try it in a clean waterfilled bowl and see if bubbles gleam but remember fish have better sight than us in water:)
