Leadcore Diameter/ weight

Is the lead in leadcore roughly the same diameter/ weight regardless of brand?

Bought some ESP leadcore today and stripped off the outter so that i could use the inner lead for weighting some hooks for rolling meat, and was suprised just how thin the lead actually is and how little weight was added to the hook.

Any recommendations for a heavier leadcore would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Trevor,

I like Ray Walton's method of tungsten putty with heatshrink tubing over the top.

Like the look of that stuff Jeremy, sounds just the stuff i'm after!

That sounds quite an expensive method if you fish a rock strewn river Ian, thanks for the reply though.

Hi Trevor,

Try looking at what is available from the fly tying world.

You will find heavy lead wire for wrapping around hooks but my favourite are the nymph weights which can be squeezed onto the shank of the hook.

Much cheaper than leadcore.

As an alternative, get some tungsten beads, 4-5mm, again from the fly tying suppliers, secure on the hook with a piece of silicon or shrink tube, very neat!
