Lead making

Suggest....When you have cast the lead ,immediately attatch a piece of maluble wire and drop it straight into a pot with powder coating. Powder will adhere to lead if hot enough. Then hang high over a flame just enough to see coating melt.Remove from heat, hang up on the wire ,to cool and harden.
Clean swivel or whatever.
Works perfectly well.

The problem with dipping as soon as the lead comes out the mould is the sprue which needs to be cut off and filed down. Also, a hot mould might see a bit of `leakage` out of the edges which also needs cleaning.

I found a small cheap oven which heated to 250C, the perfect temperature for powder coating. Heat the leads for ten minutes, dip in powder then bung back in the oven for a minute (trial and error will give exact times). For a matt `rough` coated lead you`ll need to let everything cool down then reheat the lead, dip it in neat powder then straight into cold water (the colder the better hence the reason salted water is the best) to stop the powder melting.

`Dung` leads are done the same as a matt finish but with the use of fertiliser/compost. Its the stuff with poo in it (hence the name `dung` leads!).

I still make my own leads but heven`t bothered coating them for a few years. If you want some uncoated let me know and I`ll do a batch for you.
