Lack of humour

Jim Foxall

Senior Member
I was disappointed to receive a call from Ashfield Angling Club that someone on BFW had informed them that I had posted derogatory comments about the club. Let me make it clear. Ashfield Angling Club is an excellent well run club and no adverse comments were made in my post.

The whole tenure of my post was intended to be humorous and most BFW members saw it as that. The character portrayed was a fictitious shyster and Eddy Farrell's reference to Terry Thomas was on the right wavelength.

I am genuinely sorry that someone was sufficiently upset to cause mischief. Humour plays a great part of my life. It's just the way I see things. We all have different ideas of what humour is and clearly, some people's are at variance with mine. With this in mind, I think that I'd better limit my future postings to the straight and narrow.

I can't quite believe, especially with the associated comments, that anyone took the thread seriously. Even if the initial post was deemed deadly serious could they not tell it wasn't from the subsequent posts? As for reporting it to the club, some folks really need to get out more. I can only wonder at what would motivate someone to go to the length of actually reporting Jim to Ashfield. I'd probably find humour in them so spectacularly missing the point if it wasn't so desperately sad.

Wow Jim, you will be getting a call from Chris Morris offering you a job soon if you can get that sort of response.;)

Jim,

FYI the mods took a look at this, and whilst we saw the funny side, one has to consider the angling club's point of view - hence we moved the thread.

Your subsequent phone call justifies our action. By the way I dont know the club concerned.

Its incredibly difficult to get dry humour across here (or any written word tbh) it probably would have worked had you used a ficticous club :) So I wouldnt consider our moderation to be a slap on the wrist, and certainly dont let it stop you trying to be funny in future ;) nor limit your posting frequency!

Cheers

Andy

I suggest you forget all about humour if you want to be taken seriously as a Barbel angler. I doubt if you will ever catch a big Barbel, due to your flippant attitude. However just in case you fluke one I suggest you practice your serious angler, dead hard, mean and moody look for the pic. To get the look just right you should sky+ Strike Back Project Dawn for some fine examples of the required look. If you are a more traditional angler, The Borgias has some pretty wicked looks, the assasin and Lucretcia's hubby are very good.
Hope this helps

I'm just hoping that none of this effects Jim's long search for a Fox Kevlar rod. Perhaps Fox would like to give him a ring?

Chortle!!!

Unfortunately Jim, some people combine having zero sense of humour with a "need to complain" attitude. It is rife among the politically correct halfwits who dominate society these days.

As someone who works in education I know just how carefully we have to tread lest our attempts at humour are deemed offensive or, as has happened to you, not recognised in the context in which they are made. Keep up the funny posts Jim; as Chris says, the pathetic responses from the zero humour brigade are humour in themselves

jim,

some people lie awake at night thinking what they can moan n complain about the next day. these " victor meldrew" people are not happy unless they are calling or complaining about someone/something.
laughing makes you live longer n enjoy life and you are even better remembered !
so keep your humour well alive and give em the jovel two fingered salute. ;)
your post made me laugh and it made an old man happy......long may you prosper jim. :D

Well Shaun, you have an incisive mind and correctly predict that I catch very few barbel. However, this is probably because I spend a lot of my fishing time walking alongside various barbel rivers chatting to barbel fishermen and freely offering advice on how to improve their catch rate. However this is all going to change. I am trialling a piece of kit that will revolutionise barbel fishing as we know it. Catch rates will go through the roof, glugs, magic potions and such junk, will be a thing of the past. This will be the biggest fishing "landmark" since the hair rig. I am unable to divulge anymore at this point as patents are in the process of being filed. But be assured BFW members will be the first to benefit

'How should we during the season proper snog a Barbel in a particular way before releasing it'?......or whatever!!

As for Jim's original post I found it very amusing but then I'm from the old school when you grew up giving & taking a bit of stick, thus you can recognize a wind up, but these days the PC brigade frown upon that....sad gits!

Jim is it The Fox Kevlar mark II?

Or is it BFW's old board hero Derek with his masterful camo rig reinvigorated for the newer BFW generation?

Jim, it was one of the best posts that I have seen since posting on both BFW incarnations. The best form of outrageous. Each subsequent post better than the former & richly portrayed. Keep it up.

Cheers, Jon

I think that any reference to attempts to patent Mehong may result in rather more stiff action than a mear phone call. The Fox marketing board have their eyes on you now Jim. As does the anti slavery section of your local barbel police force.
A kind offer nether the less.
