In fairness, these shots of the captor with the fish in the water must be better for fish welfare, less risk of being dropped or kept of the water for too long.

All though if i tried it on the silty meres I fish then I'd be neck deep in foul smelling silt!
 
No one ever had a go at someone like Mike Wilson for his iconic Savay shots, strange. Not much gurning at the camera in those photos. It seems a minor detail to pick up on really and not something that ever bothered me.

Maybe gurning is the way to go, the bigger the fish, the more exaggerated the gurn?

As gurning seems to be becoming a lost art, maybe anglers can help inject some new life into it?

Obviously specimen bream hunters will be the best at it.

Maybe or just do what comes naturally. Proper comedy gurns with the regulation horse collar could be a go'er

I am not having a go at any one individual , it just that I don't get why these anglers [ mostly carp , but it is creeping in to Barbel fishing as well ] have to look so dreadfully miserable on their trophy shots WHY ? I think it's an affectation and would love to know who started it all , just look happy for goodness sake , a smile costs nothing , are they not pleased to catch a big fish ? Anyway as you rightly say Stuart , its a minor detail in the greater scheme of things
 
I’m not personally bothered and find it hard enough as it is to take a selfie holding a fish without trying to hold a fake smile. Setting the timer running back, picking it up while hoping its not going to jump…all adds to the stress & the serious look i guess!
What does bother me is the trend of holding fish as far out as possible & ‘over estimating’ the size. Even Angling Times has pictures sent in that are obviously not what they are.

Looking / not looking 😂 , TBH I like both but have found that you can get really strange expressions looking strait on to the camera ( as this example shows) so I like to look down and admire a bit of luck 👍

It's getting a little ridiculous now. Mike just voiced his dislike for the 'are you having a conversation with the fish' look in photos. It's a funny look which looks more like a staged pose than a smile, say, which suggests the angler's happy with the catch. A smile can almost betray a glimmer of emotion too. Fair enough if the angler's been up all night, and is knackered - though that seems to be a different look altogether.

To summarise - it's quite alright to state one's opinion, without getting shot down. Particularly if it's one of aesthetics.
