J W Young Reels, History, Assembly and Use

I just love centrepins and even though I am winding down my collection I am always tempted when something different comes along.
Never met Chris but have spoken with him and had repairs etc done by him.

Great company to deal with , I had a problem with an original MK 1 Rolling Pin where the locking mechanism started to loosen causing the drum to wobble Thus was bought before Chris took over the company himself , but he said send it in , and repaired the reel for free , all it cost me was postage. Superb customer service from them. Have expanded my collection since then with a Green MK2 Rolling Pin and a River Specialist which are both getting well used and a pleasure to use.
 
Never used a pin but am tempted to buy one, although can't justify the cost of a JW Young for maybe half a dozen sessions a year.

Might have to have a look at some of the budget options, accepting they won't be made to the same standards as these reels. Am also a bit wary of used reels, knowing that careless use and storage can spoil their free running workings.
 
Just treated myself to the Ray Walton Y4050SLG.

Went to buy it today and a certain retailer has it at 15% off so saved a good chuck of cash especially as their RRP was £385 anyway.
 
Sent my Milltackle Barbel Catcher to Garry just the other day. One of the wooden handles fell off during use, and was lost on the bank. He's also fixed a R Walton pin of mine, in the past. Excellent service and a nice chap.

Steve bit of a plug but I'm selling a lovely little okuma Sheffield bought off Mike on here a few weeks back. It'll make a cracking first pin. I watched this video a few ago great isn't it seeing inside the factory doors so to speak. I'd love to be an apprentice there and learn the trade. One of a kind that's for sure. Be interesting to know how much that reel was?
I've got a heritage and love it, had some memory bank days on it. Not to mention John Wilson when I was growing and seeing the iconic reel in use.
 
Just got my Ray Walton as seen in this video - it looks too beautiful to use !!!

Got a bit of a bargain as was £385 (£399 RRP) new but got 15% in the Boxing Day sale so paid £327 for it in the end.
