It's Another Landing Net Handle.....

This year I have gone back to using the old fiberglass 10' three section telescopic match handle I used to use before I bought a powerstretch.

So far this year it has landed around 80 barbel including 6 doubles. I cant see me changing back again any time soon, when I want a short handle I simply leave a section off, if I'm fishing a tight swim I collapse it as I bring the contents towards me, what could be simpler?
Match gear is designed to work and make life easy, I'm thinking of getting one of those platform wheelbarrow trolleys next, they carry all your gear and then the wheel comes off, the legs adjust and you have a stable flat area for all your kit....Genius, just what's needed for a bit of winter cod fishing on the lower Severn or the Tidal Trent.

Ade, if you've had six doubles already you want to start fishing some hard rivers:D
As for landing net handles i use a drennan which has had to be repaired more than once so not really upto the job. Think i will get myself the Chris Brown net next which looks pretty bomb proof. My main problem isnt the handles it's finding a suitable 36" net that is easier to use in a decent flow than my current net head.

Sorry Jes, I exaggerated, it's only 5 doubs from two rivers (the sixth one was a February fish) and 78 fish total. The river gods are being very good to me this season; toasting the river with 25 year old malt on opening night is obviously paying off.

Jez , I assume you mean the bespoke 36" Barbel/Chub Rover. The pole is extendable from 5’ closed to virtually 10’ fully extended. The adjustment is a simple twist and lock mechanism.

Is this not just another failure waiting to happen, as with the Drennan?

I hope not as his stuff has a mega reputation and it least it's made in the uk and not some far east sweat shop.

Yep, - mate has a Carp version the quality of his is great.

I'm in the market for a new handle (some of the swims at YF need one), don't mind spending good money, I just want to buy once. Would be nice to hear if someone actually owns one.

Your post suggests you may have ordered already. Let me know if the 'lock' looks as thought it'll stand the test of time and if so I'll place an order.

So far this season after landing some 100+ barbel on the TT, including a few doubles, my Drennan Super Specialist has done the Business, teamed up with a Korum Rubberised Barbel spoon net, with a Stainless Steel Thread (Thankyou Ian Turnbull), substituted for the Brass one. Has done the business for me. The Abu fold down landing net has been good as well, as a second landing net.

Anybody got any idea's for a travel landing net handle ?

Twice recently I have left home for work with my 4 piece Harrison in the boot with the intention of doing a couple of hours only to to find I have left my net handle at home !! I would like something at least 3 metres long when in use but capable of fitting in the boot with my travel rod.....something, perhaps in 4 pieces or a 4 section telescopic....BUT strong with it !!...want it all, don't I....any suggestions ??

gardner net & pole

I purchased the Gardner extendable landing net pole and barbel spoon at the start of the season. I have to agree with many of those comments made regarding the weight of the pole although I havent had any problems with the locking collar slipping to date. The net on the other hand didnt even make it from the garage to the car having both of the locking screws come out of the frame. Funny thing was that I reported the 'excess play' in this to tackle uk, the on-line mail order people when I purchased it, the responce was really - it is what it is......

If I was to be on the look out again for a net combo I would still probably go for the pole but would deffinately go for one of the riveted nets like the Korum job.

i also had problems with the drennan twistlock sticking, the main problem is with over tightening of the lock, spoke to drennan and they said it is only supposed to have a quarter turn, if the screw bit in the middle is worn just phone drennan and they will send out a new one foc.

I use Fox handles

Fox Big Fish handle for Barbeling or long reach stuff (same size as Drennan)

Fox Tourist for easy of transport - think it's 7ft but under 3 ft for transport.

Backup - good ole Conoflex lightweight had for 20 years!

I've had a good few years use out of my Milo Chromium net pole. Actually a match design but handles a large spoon net very well and is extremely strong and stiff. 13' length comes in very handy in treacherous flood conditions and has lifted Barbel to 14lb+ (those were the days !) up highish banks with no problem.

Had the Drennan SS problem of the "non locking", locking nut inside the main handle.
Behold the wonders of WD40 on the inner thread, it seems perfect again.

I had that problem last week also, a bit of silicone grease sorted it. Wouldnt swap them for any other.

Be interested to hear your thoughts when you get this Dave, thinking of one myself, not all that expensive when you consider a Drennnan SS will set you back £50

my 42 matrix cost me £150...ouch,
may have a write up, that's if i can put anything in it...lol
