It just came off

I have attached a pic of my broken Fred Crouch Jet which as you can see is quite unwell. I literally have no idea how this happened. No trauma of any kind. Anyway, is it simple to fix? Please remember I am a pen pusher with virtually no practical skills to speak of. Any thoughts would be very welcome.

Fred fixed mine when it happened to mine

Howard

There was a very short period of time when there was a problem in the manufacturing process, where sometimes the joint had subsequently come apart, it was rare but yes it did happen - I have to stress that this was indentified and addressed and would not recurr.

How do you test? (well not you per se because you already know yours has failed :)) I have 6 or more of these reels and there's no apparent outward indication of any problem. I do know only of a couple that have broken and (including Darryl's) these were fixed.

Did you buy direct from Fred?

Email me and I'll put you in touch, it can be fixed.

Take Paul's advice Howard,
Looking at your pic. it appears that there are no fixing screws or rivits to secure both components together, therefore they must have been silver soldered or braized together depending on what materials were used, and the joint has obviously failed.
I hope this did'nt occur when playing the fish of a lifetime!!

Great, thanks Paul. I did buy the reel direct from Fred, a couple of years or so ago. If it's a soldering type fix then I can probably get that sorted from here to save any bother. Just glad it's quite fixable as I really like it.

Thanks again.

Thanks Dave and alas it wasn't when playing a fish. Bizarrely, it was attached to the butt section of a float rod which was just leaning against a wall. It just fell off. Suspect it was a build up of pressure from the reel seating etc.

Same thing happened to mine and Fred replaced it for me, it was one of the badly brazed batch Paul mentioned from a few years ago

The same thing happened to mine and Paul arranged for it to be fixed. Fred even called me to say it was being sorted and would be back with me soon (the call choked me up, I can tell you).

Well that was nice and quite rare in this fast paced over commercialised world of ours. I sent the reel back to Fred today. He called me, apologised for the fault and said that the reel would be returned all fixed and shiny next Tuesday. That made me feel warm inside.
