Introducing: The all new river chair!

Rhys Perry

Senior Member
Well, as one set of legs on my rather rubbish TFG chair have broke, and I've lost the receipt (despite having receipts for all sorts of utter nonsense!), I decided to make the most of what I do have and doctored it to suit the steep banks of the severn.
And here it is:

It remains to be seen how long the rest of this 'made from tin' piece of cr*p lasts, but as no tackle companies bother to make chairs to cater for steep river banks, I thought I might throw this prototype out to see the reaction.
I certainly think it needs to be stronger (though it couldn't be any less, please nobody buy this chair!) and maybe the back legs would be better if angled down a bit more, but I do think we're crying out for a chair of this kind.
What are your thoughts?

I'll be off later to test it out.:)

you could remove the tfg badge, that might help, though, i doubt not....lol

It should work well Rhys. The back legs of my chair remain folded up like that for most of the time.It may be better without the feet on it as I tend to end up pushing the frame at the top into the bank.

Rhys,
I have a light weight JRC chair, and when on a steep bank I don't unfold the rear legs, and adjust the front legs down as required. This works fine and has taken my wieght for a few years and is still in one piece.

All the best
Colin

same hardly ever use the back legs on my chair , never found the need for them on the river . you would of thought that someone by now should make a chair with just 2 front legs or be able to take the back ones off for this purpose.

My old Fox Premier Plus chair had a similar feature. In fact it had feet welded to the underside of the folded down back legs. Still going strong today! They don't make 'em like that any more :(

Cheers,
Andy F

The only problem with folding the back legs under is you end up sitting on the stretcher which holds the back legs apart.
I modified my light weight chair by removing the bolts which hold the back legs on and replacing them with a couple of longer ones which I drilled a hole through which takes an R clip in place of the nut, it's a now a ten second job to remove the back legs completely.
I also lengthened the front legs with a piece of tube from am old brolley which was the same diameter as the short extending legs which were on it.

;)

I think it looks ideal for your situation m8....no harm in trying it out lm the same as the guys sometimes banks are to steep to put the rear legs out and l fold mine in..
Would be good to see a chair with say spikes on the rear for holding firm on steep banks...which can be removed for normal feet to be attached
Another thing that amazes me bout the chair situation is why on earth dont makers make chairs with carry straps..
My nash one is the only one lve seen with carry straps...

Cheers

Well it worked ok for me last night, but front legs could do with being a bit longer. As it was the original front legs that broke, had to put the rear ones on the front!
Like Adrian says, you usually end up sitting on the stretcher with the back legs folded up, nice modification though.
But this is my point, we shouldn't have to be modifying our chairs, or sitting on stretchers!
Why can't someone just make a decent river chair?:(

Though I am being increasingly drawn towards the chub lo-lite.

The Korum lightweight chair works great on uneven banks ,long, strong adjustable legs makes dodgy banks a doddle, and you can stick the accessories on them.
Oh ,it's very strong and well built too !
And yes I am sponsored by them .

The old version of the lightweight was lighter Chris and IMO better for that reason, if anyone has one of the original lightweight chairs and wants to sell it I'd be interested. The new version of the lightweight is only slightly lighter than my standard accessory chair, so is therefore not really lightweight at all. However the accessory chair is excellent and very robust.
Too heavy for long yomps though.

We`re putting these into production for next spring, super steep banks are a doddle! Extends the legs to a minimum of 17"

Yet another hole in the market.
Martyn....a chair made to fish steep banks please.Without the stretcher as correctly pointed out by Adrian.

Well if you believe in all the sales spiel, they all make em, just ask Pons.:D

I thought the Chub Lo-lite had been discontinued?? If not they're a good chair with your back bar in place as standard, strong but not strong enough to drive a car over:eek:, just ask my missus:rolleyes:.

Definitely food for thought Rich!

Probably not an option with the more modern adjusting mechanisms but I adapted my old chair by using the lower half of a pair of crutches!! Worked a treat though just like the new chair pictured above.
