Ideal Barbel Weather

Here in The Weald of Kent the weather is perfect for catching barbel: it is warm, humid with the occasional light shower.

Richard Walker wrote that these were April days in September, although on this occasion August.

I remember many such days on the Kennet when the barbel were plentiful and multiple catches were commonplace. The river was in those golden days crystal clear and full of ranunculus. Bunty always accompanied me on such occasions and the water meadows were full of dairy cows. Water voles plopped into the river and I recall on several occasions a kingfisher perching on my hand held MkIV Avon. The barbel were not as big as they are now, a nine pounder was a fine fish, but they were fighting fit and not pot bellied.

Golden times on a wonderful river.

Regards,

Hugo

Walked a good mile of the Kennet the other night. Had never seen it so clear. On with the specs and I excitedly went about a bit of fish spotting. Disheartened though to only see one chub and a small barbel. I guess the rest were just tightly packed somewhere and totally hidden from view. Hmmmm.
