In your opinions how much pellet, hemp, etc can the average Barbel eat when there on one! One handfull or less, or more? Basing it on say a three pounder.

I would say more Mark, but would there be that much in the vicinity by the time Mr Barbel finds your bait unless it is cast right on his head. Watching chub on a river near work, they can eat loads and dont usually stop until its all gone;)

?

So how much bait do we take ,when Bream fishing on tip years ago we would not put less than thirty jaffas in laced with worm ,castor and squatts,so are we giving them enough to keep them there ?

Gary,

I think the lack of responses is down to a lack of knowledge, I would have absolutely no idea personally how much a Barbel can eat, what I do know is that I like to fish enough bait to give them a taste but not enough to stop them being hungry, which to my fishing is around half a dozen to a dozen boilies.

I recall Lee Jackson feeding tutti frutti boilies to a carp of about 8lb whilst up a tree. I think it ate over 50 of them so I'd guess a similar sized barbel could eat similar - that's the equivalent of a lot of hemp!

Fishes digestive systems are not the same as ours. Get them feeding on something they enjoy and they'll be discharging it from their vents long before they've had enough of it.

if your only going for a few hours of a evening how much hemp do you put in

Hi Mark,

As has been said many times before on here, there are a number of factors involved such as previous feeding of the fish, water temps and protein content of the bait. My suggestion, as ever would be not to put too much pellet in and work on catching one at a time. They are much easier to catch when they're hungry.
People will have numerous stories of the time they "filled it in" and had a red letter day. What people (probably the same ones) don't say, is how many times they've failed by doing exactly the same thing, not only spoiling their chances of catching anything for days but also any chance for others fishing the same strech!

Hemp and maggot/caster is easier to use in reasonable quantity than pellets or boilies due to the protein content and digestability of these baits.

I would also consider what everyone else is putting in on the strech. I catch most of my fish in the summer months on single 17mm pellets or boilies because other people are chucking in shedfulls of pellets and boilies.

Hope that helps Mark?

Regards,
Jeff

feed

Thats the point im making Julien, over the last few years a few of us have been feeding one particular batch of fish and when on one will go through a bucket of hemp or pellets with ease.Ihave never made an effort to fish for this shoal as find it more helpfull watching them and trying to put this to effect in other swims. But from what ive seen using the feeder doesnt give them anywhere enough to keep them occupied and keep throwing a bait dropper on there heads does you no favours.
