Hooks

I know it's all been done before, but things change so I'm asking the question again....

I have been using the mugger pattern for a while now, but sometimes struggle to get the hair to hang right, particularly with smaller hair rigged baits.

I made the switch to talon tips and these have been lovely, I'm just struggling to justify the £4 a packet price tag.

Can anyone suggest a good hook that doesn't cost a packet?

Korum Xpert hooks are good value for money at about £1.50 per pack of 10...
Personally I would prefer to pay extra rather than use cheap hooks and loose the fish of a life time (if one exists in the Swale :D)

I have tried the korum xpert hooks as I was a fan of there seamless patterns however even though the xperts are cheap at £1 odd for 10 as opposed to £4ish for pukka drennans and the like you get what you pay for mostly.
I did find with the xperts you could feel the line grating on the inside surface of the eye when threading line and some of the eye closeures were a bit rough so I now use Drennans barbel hooks or the newish specimen variety that go down to a 16s I like small hooks;) and I think Its worth the money for a hook that you are confident with.

Yeah same hooks as what I use them Steve, can't fault the drennan ones, I tend to use the barbel ones for meat with it being a bigger gape but like the drennan specimen ones for everything else.. Have total confidence in them.

Have used the korum ones but can't say I've ever had an issue

Pallatrax The Hook, not the cheapest, or dearest, but as said before, you get what you pay for. When you think what you spend on rods/reels etc, 3 or 4 quid for 10 hooks ain,t too bad. Why scrimp on the most important bit between you and the fish. :)

Cheers guy, I do subscribe to the you get what you pay for thing, however I seem to be blunting expensive hooks really quickly and just fancied an alternative.

Has anyone else had issues getting the hair to hang correctly on these aggressively curved patterns such as the mugga?

Drennan Continental boilie hooks . Trust me I have tried them all and these are the ones I have stuck with ,sharp and very strong .

Save yourself a small fortune and buy a hook sharpener! Straight points are easier to sharpen than curved so go for something like the Drennan Super Specialist Barbel, Gardner Incizor or ESP Raptor Big T's. Check the point every cast and if it's turned over, a quick lick with the file and back out it goes!

Regarding Pallatrax the hook, I personally suffered from a lot of hookpulls shortly after hookup with this pattern and I recently binned the lot. For years I have used Drennan Super Specialist Barbel and still do (the size 12 is on the small side and is excellent for small hair rigged baits); however recently I had one straighten on me in a larger size whilst playing a good fish. This sought me to find a stronger pattern for certain situations and I came across the new Korda Wide Gap X (extra strong); since using these in size 12 and 10, I’ve been really impressed and filled with confidence, as in addition to being extremely strong, the hookpoint stays very sharp and I’ve yet to have one turn over on me.

Hook pulls

Funny how we have different experiences with the same product. I've been using Pallatrax "the hook" in sizes 8, 10 & 12 for many years and have never had a problem with hooks pulls or hooks straightening out whilst playing a fish.Thats my experience I only wish my local tackle shop stocked them.
