Hooks that don't dink so much on gravel

kasman barbel max for me:)apart from pumping the heavyweights from the tidel in normal & flood conditions & the mad dash swale fish, i really like the micro barb that seems to allow the barbel to be unhooked easily with fingers with most of the fish landed:) i have the gamatsu hooks, liked the look of them too just not got round to useing yet ;)

The time I fished with you Jon I was using Korda wide gapes  I can vouch for their sharpness..maybe a little difficult to unhook tho:eek:..cheers mate ;)

ESP D7s for me. Bent a few though on angry Barbel last season. But more than happy with them, love the micro barb which makes unhooking a doddle.

Defo the Trent for me next season; the barbel need 30lb line to subdue them and bend hooks designed to land 40lb+ carp.:)

Jon, I've found Korda Wide Gape to be about the best big fish beaked pattern, though you may want to consider the B or even X versions,; X being designed for 60lb+ carp.;)

Always used to swear by ESP Raptors and Drennan Super Specialist Barbel hooks but stopped using them because of the tips burring on gravel.

Thanks again lads.

Steve H - those wide gapes are cracking hooks mate. I hope the fingers healed mate - that hook was very deeply inbedded way past the flesh & as you mentioned, not easily removed!! I was glad we managed to extract it on the first attempt.

You took it well, usually a hospital procedure for most as I have done before...

I also got myself one of these little things. I got the vice and the Red and green file and they can recover points that have gone over on a size 10, havent tried anything smaller. Saves tying up another rig every 30 mins.

I can't believe you guys will travel miles for your fishing with fuel costs at record levels, you will pay up to 15 quid for a kilo of bait, think nothing of spending £200 on a rod and reel but won.t replace a 35p hook.

Modern hooks in the smaller sizes, by that I mean a size 2 down, are not designed to be sharpened. Throw them away if they are damaged and tie a new one, it only takes a minute or so and could be the difference between landing that fish of a lifetime or having another tale of the one that got away.

agreed, change it, hooks are cheap.

Interesting how peoples views differ. I've used Raptor T6's in 10's & 8's over the last few years for Barbel without a problem. A couple of years ago on a similar thread Paul Hiom stated he'd given up on them as the point turned to easily, ( he emphasised it again on TFW ). A common theme with Raptors it would appear from this thread & others. Yet I and many others wouldn't use anything else. Why ? I ask. Why do so many people manage to turn the point ? Is it the rivers you fish ? Or maybe the rigs that you use ? I'm intrigued.
