Hooks for meat

Neil Warren

New Member
I would like to try luncheon meat as bait but I don't know what the best hook pattern would be. Firstly can the same hook pattern be used for hair rigging meat as well as burying the hook in the bait.

I have used size 2 & 4s but there is so much difference between the hook sizes now. I tend to use the one big enough for the bait i am hooking and generally err on the larger size. Just ensure its strong enough.

Bought some from a member of BFW, in the close season, they are the best meat hooks I have ever used, but cleared out my mail box:mad: and lost details...think they were Thamesley hooks anyway if you read this mate :)

Many thanks for the reply to my question, I've found the Partridge Barbel Hook on Ebay so I purchased 2's, 4's and 6's. I don't get to go Barbel fishing very often because of the distance to travel and I am disabled but I will try fishing meat next time I go. Thank you chaps for the replies.

I still use Drennan Continental Boilie hooks for all barbel fishing apart from particles. Ultra reliable.

Size 6 Korda wide gapes when you are burying the hook inside, never let me down over the years. I use JRC MBT4 in a size 8 for hair rigging and tie garden wire onto the hair loop. Those Partridge hooks are good as well, still got some of the wire meat hooks from about 12 years ago.

I agree with Jon, as a rule of thumb for me 2's & 4's in Drennan specialist or specimen or ESP, so whatever that translates to in other makes, also Drennan barbel are sized differently to Drennan Specimen or specialist so that also applies.
Also make sure your meat is soft enough for the hook to pull through easily.

stupid question time ...........

i have some of the partridge hooks with the wire on a hair ......

how the hell do i use them !!! :D

Stuart,

Push the wire through a chunk of soft luncheon meat, spam or meatball etc, thread the meat up the wire so some of the wire sticks out the bottom of the bait, turn the wire into a curve/hook and push it back into the meat. It should stay on, but dont try and cast it too far.

Gardening wire is a bit stiffer and easier to work with if you want to snip off the soft wire and replace it .

Good luck.

Paul
