hook

The hook!! If im hair rigging ill use the pallatrax hook or a similar shaped wide gape alternative, if I am rolling meat I will use a hook with a straight point so that it penetrates the fishes mouth easier, I belive a beaked point would haveless chance of catching the lip as its pulled through the meat!

Sorry i havnt been as sharp as some in replying but il get straight to point depends on the bait being used

All the different hooks you can eye up in the shops now days, it's enough to drive you round the bend.

I used to prefer a short shank, especially when faced with a wide gape but now have gone full circle.

For hair rigged baits I have found the Korum Xpert Power hook to be very good but, and this might be controversial, I tie my knotless knot with the free end going UP through the eye (with monofilament).

Hi Chris,
i have used many hooks in my time, but this one is brilliant, it does not blunt when pulled across the gravel, it is strong and very sharp.
Gardner Covert Talon Tip,
I use a size 12 when I use a hair rig, and it has landed quite a few double figure Barbel.
I was put onto these by Phil Nixon, he raves over these hooks.

For very large meat baits it has to be the Drennen Continental.

Hi again Brian, I quite agree with your hook choice. In gravel bottomed swims, the point needs protection...the in-turned eye and point on the Talon Tips do the job well. My current choice is the Korda Kaptor Kurve, because the in-turned eye and the curved shank do the same job....and their sticky sharp point and curved shank help a lot with hooking fish on the bite, in my opinion. Not a lot to chose between them is my guess.

Drennan Continental....brilliant hooks, used them way back in carp fishing with big baits, but its so long since I have seen them, I didn't even know they were still available :p Time for a re-visit methinks...rolling hooks par excellence methinks :)

Cheers, Dave.
