Hook for Knotless knot

Dave Quinn

Senior Member & Supporter
I've switched my hook lengths to a new fluorocarbon that is thicker than the mono I was using before and it makes passing the end through the eye of the hooks a second time when I'm tying a knotless knot very difficult

I use drennan method carp hooks for all my barbel fishing, a 16 when I'm stick fishing with a 6mm pellet and a 10 when I'm fishing with a static bait. They're strong as you like, I've never had one straighten in me, but the eyes are a bit small, and things aren't helped by my poor near sight

Any recommendations for hooks that might be better suited to the job?

Thanks in advance for any help

Lots of superb hooks available, and I'm sure you'll get a multitude of good recommendations. I use three types which I trust and have 100% confidence in: Drennan Super Specialists, Drennan Super Specialist Barbel and Fox Arma Point SSSP/SSBP. Increasingly I'm leaning toward straight point hooks such as SSSP and the Super Spec's, and for value for money, the good old Super Spec's take some beating.

Try threading a thin braid through the eye, make a loop thread your line through the loop and pull back through the eye of your hook. Have had the same problem when using fluro carbon line.

I buy needle threaders from Dunelm or similar store, same problem poor eyesight. Thread it through the hook eye and pull your line/braid through with it.

I only use Drennan Super Specialists and Drennan Super Specialist Barbel for static and feeder work. I have 100% trust in these hooks, well made and stay sharp. My hooked finger is the prove on the sharpness when making rigs up. I find some other makes have a smaller eye that without my glasses i just have to give up on. Anything smaller than a size 14, i have no hope

Dave,
What diameter is the Fluoro that you're using? I sometimes use the same hooks in a 10 with 12lb Daiwa Infinity Floorit Fluoro using a knotless knot with no problems. I do however tend to tie my hook links at home in good light as opposed to on the bank.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I'll get myself a needle threader and try the hooks you suggested Ian and Joe
