My mate dropped of some lovely straight Bamboo a few weeks ago and I had an idea to make a handmade rod rest.
Never done anything like this and I like a challenge.
I have a lathe at home and set about making a brass ferrel from some hex off cuts. Epoxied some ally rod down the core of the Bamboo and got the tap/die set out to make the relevant BSF 3/8 thread.
Got it all together this evening and the same mate dropped off some small antlers I wanted to use at the physical rod rest. Drilled the antlers and fitted a threaded brass rod down the centre.
I still need to tidy it up tomorrow and varnish it but it doesn’t look too bad considering. The joy is I can use any shop-bought rod rest head with it too.
