History of the older Drennan Avon rods

Tackle Tavern also do used tackle. Reasonable prices too. eg 2 rod Korum quiver good condition £15...plenty of other stuff worth checking out.

That's what my posts were about, Neil. 😉 As a back-up for my Acolyte float rod, I've also just bought a (looks unused) Shimano X1 13ft float rod from them for £35.00 delivered. I'm addicted... mind you, I still only have four rods... not nearly enough.

Back to the Drennan Avon. Can anyone tell me if the current 'slow taper' tips fit the Series 7 rods, please?

Forgetting the more recent specialist twin tip duos and even the series 7 Avon/ quiver rods. Prior to those I have a pair of super specialist Duo rods that I think were available to buy around the mid 2000s does anyone know if they done an identical rod of around the same time just called the super specialist that was just an Avon rod without the quivertip section? Or was just the duos available

Only reason for asking I’ve been after finding a second pair of those super specialist duos and a pair have come up for sale but just called the super specialist that I never knew existed and the seller doesn’t seem to know much about them.

I have a Super Specialist Barbel, 1.75 and a 2lb top. cant remember what I paid, around £70.00 I think. Would not part with it.
 
I have the 12ft 1.5lb super specialist it was purchased new around 2012-14 it did not come with quivers but you could order them for this rod . As a youngster I was used to Avon rods being classed as 1.25lb my father had the 10ft split cane hand built by Olivers of Knebworth. Plus the famous 10ft 1.5lb mk4 Carp ( Richard Walker) again hand built split cane by Olivers. As for reels it was the famous french built Mitchell's I still have those reels. Sorry just a trip down memory lane.
 
Seems like Avon rods have beem increasing in test ratings, whereas a true Avon rod was rated no more than 1.. t.
I suppose calling them Specialist justifies.

Going back maybe thirty years they did an 11 foot three piece Avon with detachable butt. The Mk1 was very tippy and powerful.
Mk2 was completely different, ultra soft, bit floppy for my liking. Still got it though as "might come in handy".
 
Gale are you thinking of the Legermaster 1.25 TC 11ft 3in? A three piece rod with a detachable butt, sliding reel rings and threaded top eye for detachable quivers and swing tips. Have two, good rod , they have a nice soft action. I should use them more.

To clarify , Drennan 1.5lb super specialist Grey/Orange writing on butt section
that although this rod came with only one tip section it has a quiver tip eye fitted to that section which is the screw in type. I used the rod without using any quiver tips. It also stated that it could be used with braid.

Yes , Legermaster, that's the one. The Mk1 was much more powerful than the Mk2.

These rods were the precursor to the “Duo” and were produced by a different manufacturer than the “Duo” twin top rods, and although the rods appear to be made on the same mandrel Drennan assured me they they were not
Currently I think I have 1x 1:25 super specialist, a pair of 1.25 Duos, 1x 1.5 super specialist, & 3x 1.5 Duos, the 1.5 super is mostly used for floater fishing for carp these days.
Whichever TC you have they are cracking rods, I’d not part with mine.

They also did a 12’ 1.25lb version and a quite rare 11’ version of both would have been available in the late 1980’s as I remember seeing them in my local tackle shop at the time

That’s some collection Andy. I never did get the rod pictured in this thread but do have a pair of 1.5 Duo’s
 
I might be thinning out my collection, so will have an almost as new super specialist duo up for sale soon, it is in a Series7 rod bag tho but otherwise it’s perfect
 
I use a Drennan series 7 in 1.25lb for chub and small river fishing and I love it I’ve been looking for another but as you say quite rare thought there was a 1.75lb one on eBay last week
 
I have this one that I still use . Must be early 2000s . Cracking rod .
