Hemp

Great thoughts enjoying reading this thanks. Kinda cant help wishing I was closer to the rivers but can't have it all. I have watched the barbel days and ways again recently. I personally really enjoyed them but the thing that was clear from that was how barbe l naturally route around in the stones and bottom for food. The smaller pellet mix had them in the swim and looking for longer. I will look for older threads on here but I'm super keen to try the float out on my up and coming trip.

People say the the Barbel think that hemp are snails, I think they know it’s hemp and get on it so quickly because it’s small and smells great. The fact it could look like a small snail adds to their confidence, I’m sure. Boy all this talk is getting me excited for the 16th, must have checked my gear a dozen times in the past few weeks. I’m 66 haved fished since the age of 12, but still get the buzz. Nothing comes close, (at my age) !,,

.....and Fred Crouch (blesh him), who'd caught a few, reckoned the only reason barbel ate hemp was as to assist digestion ...as it "came out of their vent unchanged from when it went down their throat".

Just this morning bought a couple of kilo of hemp from a local farm feed supplier... it is under new ownership, and the lass said that she had sold a few sacks of the stuff to anglers in the last two weeks, so using hemp is still, or seems to be a staple of the coarse anglers armoury.

Last year I gave hemp a miss entireley and concentrated on feeding micro halibut pellets in place of hemp, well looking at results in my diary, it seems that Hemp attracted a larger number of smaller fish, feeding pellets made a difference in that larger fish seemed to more in evidence , whilst sub 8 pounders were mostly absent .

I know its not scientific in any way, as my best double some years ago was taken using an open feeder filled with hemp and blocked with ground pellet and bread groundbait.... contrary to the above.

Anyway, this year I am going back to using hemp, I am thinking about hair rigging a few seeds again as a hookbait, as when I have done this before I have had unexpectedly large roach from the middle of the barbel swim, they dont put much of a bend in my barbel rods, but are always welcome.
