I have been reading "Carp Amidst the Storm" by Tim Paisley. (bought from Mark Walters) It includes references to our old BFW Friend Mike Wilson on the bit about Savay.

Trouble is...I have this real urge now to go "proper" carp fishing for a few days.

Is there any antidote or should I just try my best to ignore it?

Sleep on a bedchair in the garden for a week and get someone to wake you up every couple of hours, that oughta do it ;)

Foxy regain your senses please:eek:

Out of season barbelling, the lesser evil:)

I think you'll find Mike did 'proper' Carp fishing, in the margins, particle baits, player's rods instead of what you may find nowadays.

Hi is doing a slide show for the tenchfishers AGM today, so I'll get him to look in later.

I think you should have a go.
You can't beat the atmosphere of shell-suited, white-trainered punishers casting their baits into your margin from the opposite bank.
The sweet smell of ganja, the crunch of beer cans and the sound of hardcore garage.
The sleep disturbed by bream liners, the scurrying of rats across your peg and the 5am dawn chorus of every water fowl assembled in your swim for a ruck.

I think you'll enjoy.

Tongue firmly in cheek emoticon. :)

Some good advice, and Neil is pretty much spot on.

My "proper" carping, I may go tomorrow, will involve the use of boilies over pva bagged crushed same. About 20 yards out. 2oz leads.

I will probably use a rod pod, my 1.75 barbel rods. Sit in a private garden with cream teas in the afternoon. Baitrunners engaged.

My biggest worry will be that the long wanted for float caught first double tinca will arrive and spoil my dreams.

Steve, my first wife wouldn't agree, but I understand.

John. I will pretend I am barbel fishing..see Neils comment.

Simon, I will of course be popping home for the usual comforts come dusk. But back in the mornings.

Duncan. It's likely there will be no one else fishing the 5 acre lake. So I will probably wear plimsolls to keep the noise down. I didn't mean "proper, proper" carp fishing really, just to me. Though the odd sneaky Tufty coming in from the side, I must admit has been landed before!

I think the largest I have seen was about 45lb. Maybe 50lb. Caught one to
34lb on the tench gear but lost 4 others before.

If it rains I will go home to dry out.

Thanks for the advice.

Hi men,

Graham , I fished Savay for a season , fantastic place . Harefield , pit 3 behind , great area . All fishing is proper fishing , carping referred to by people on here as pond pigs shows they are just nitwits , it's just a different style . I'd have a bash if I were you , I miss waking up , kettle on , watching the ducks go about their lives . I miss horseshoe , moving in the middle of the night to jumping fish , waking to frost on the bag , sitting outside as it gets dark with the moon the colour of old newspaper , going down with the temps dropping . You can combine all styles of fishing mate . Couple of months to go before rivers open , why not ?.

Nothing nicer than having a fresh brew watching the day awaken sitting behind a couple of strategically placed margin baits.

Good luck if you do get out.

I would go for it Graham. I suspect you need no endorsement in order to make up your own mind, but for what it is worth, I enjoy a bit of marginal carp fishing during the 'close' and am having a great time currently blanking on a very pretty Colne Valley gravel pit. Watching the grass grow is every bit as enjoyable as catching barbel. Enjoy. :)

I sold my Carp gear and have up my syndicate place but that made me think I may have been a bit hasty.

After visiting a local etang this morning on the way back from shopping, and seeing a line of half a dozen bivvied up, cold and miserable carpers (I could tell they were carpers as each had the required three identical rod, reel, alarm sets, camo'd bivvy, coat, trousers, etc.), I couldn't imagine any more anally-retentive, tackle-important twits than today's carpers.

Give yourself a slap and go find some barbel to harrass in June.

I was walking around my local lake a few weeks back and their were a 'pod' of carpers casting within a couple of feet of the far bank vegetation in a 50 -60 yard distance. They were using pop up thingy's with PVA stockings (no not wearing  )

Anway I was dead impressed with this show of skill, and engaged a more likely type in conversation and he was a dedicated Barbel Angler like you, and thought all this was ridiculous and offered little in excitement of satisfaction given the heavy rods and leads compared to Barbel Fishing.

My faith restored, I continued my walk around the lake and was greeted with a shrill sound of a alarm advising that he should pick up his rod, he did and duly landed what looked like a plump 8-10 lb carp...only then to punch the air in delight as would one would do on landing a similar sized Barbel...Judas I thought :(

Sounds like you are going to have some fun mate. If you need someone to watch your gear while you are eating cream teas and popping home to dry off....do give me a call :D:D

Cheers, Dave.

I used to Carp fish a great deal in 70's 80's and most of the 90s and there is nothing wrong with it. Everyone must get enjoyment from the sport in the way they they prefer it, why slag people (and the way they enjoy Angling) on a net forum. Would you class all the modern Capers like Hearn, Chillcot, Lee Jackson and Co as twits.

:D

As I read that Neil I could see the look on your face

I'm guilty of having fished a few of the pools your way during close seasons gone by, but 2007 saw the end of that. (They always fished better in the depths of winter anyway ;) )

BUT

life dosen't have to be this way. There still are places where you can have peace and solitude, and the only alarm to sound, if one does, will be yours

:)

Graham,

You are a very lucky man to have such a lake. You've spent so much time on the tench there, why not give yourself a carp challenge for a period if you want to?

Concentrate on them though, or you'll do neither one thing or the other and it won't be so much fun.

I shall be starting on the Big Pit next week (a bigger challenge than any barbel in any river ;)), which I always look forward to, but a small, intimate Estate Lake would be just as sweet. :)

Remind me next time we meet, I've found some more large Thamesleys for you. Unused.

Thanks for all the comments...be they very mixed

"Concentrate on them though, or you'll do neither one thing or the other "

Thats my biggest fear to be honest.

You understand.
