Help needed on centre pin

Mark Hooper

Hello all
Now I know this has probably been done to death????
BUT here goes
Right I've bought my first centre pin never used one before, now it's only a cheaper model as I didn't want to blow big money to find out I can't get on with it??
I will be using it on a small river where under arm chucks or margins are the norm & will just be bouncing small drilled bullets down the flow.
A friend said I will need to use 8lb double strength but my question is do you load it as a normal reel if so what's the best technique????
How much do you put on as I'm worried about it bedding in???
Would you put the double strength straight on or would you back it first???

Sorry if these sound like basic questions but like I said earlier I'm a total novice with centre pins so any advice would be very helpful indeed.

Cheers everyone
Mark

I use Powerpro on my pins mate, around 70 yards straight onto the drum.

It works for me.

Hi Mark,
70 yards of line is plenty. no need for any backing.
but you need to load the line differently to a mangle...
put a rod of some kind through the middle of the spool of line and support the rod either side so that the spool can rotate freely. I use an old meat skewer. tie a noose in the end of the line and pass over the drum of the centrepin and then tighten the noose. wind the line straight onto the centrepin applying a little pressure through your fingers. direct the line from side to side as you load the reel, so that the line lay is even on the centrepin. the spool of line should be rotating. this will avoid line twist that you would get if you loaded it like a mangle.
clear as mud?!

Just one thing to add to the above,

Until you get used to playing fish on it, i would use something with a bit of "give" in it like 8lb Maxima and avoid double strength which is already pre streched.

Good luck,

Jeff
