Heavy stones

paul/andrew
thanks for your advice i,ve spent a small fortune on stonze weights in the last few months, i was personally thinking of a vice and electric drill with appropiate drill bit, would that work if i could keep it cool do you think? (sorry for hijacking the thread graham)

I drill the stones with a diamond bit in a water-cooled air driven turbine that achieves about 250,000 rpm. It makes pretty short work of any pebble. If you don't have that particular advantage then I would suggest a Dremel type hand held drill with a small diamond bit (ask your dentist). Water cooling is essential so hold it under the tap.

Jesus! you work for NASA!:D

If you are handy with tools use an angle grinder or a tile cutter to cut a shallow slot into the stone. Araldite a length of tube from the inside of a spray bottle into the slot and while you have the glue handy stick a strip of lead over the slot.
Hey presto you have a heavy, inline stone which always lands lead side down.

To make the other type simply slip a short piece of wire through one eye of a swivel and glue it onto a stone with Araldite. You could if you wished do away with the swivel and just stick the wire loop on the stone.

Or you could just buy them.......

PS, Heavy as lead, looks like stone.......Sounds like Galena to me, you can pick it up in the streams around Snailbeach in the Stiperstones.

Hi Jerry

Just be careful ..knock a few holes in the top of a pop bottle or use a washing up liquid bottle for the water and drill little at a time DO NOT go mad or you will break the drill bit or knock all the diamonds of it.Set the drill on slow .Be sure to clean the hole out when drilling or it will get clogged up.

If you can get hold of a battery drill .Make sure the stone is clamped down in a vice ,dont hold it in your hand ,dont let the water near the battery of electric motor, wear safety glass,s or goggles, sorry about banging on about safety but the last thing you need is a bit of stone in your eye or an electric shock.Just think about what your doing and plan the job out right its so easy to get into trouble !.
