Has anyone got "The bfw trotter"....?

I've been using a JW Young Lightweight pin with a Shakespeare LXL 13-17ft float rod for river trotting which is all well and good for smaller fish and lighter lines(plus the occasional decent chubb),however I fear getting something big on and just getting smashed or dragged all over....

I've got myself a lovely custom made Barbus Pin from Gary Mills so I'm thinking coupling it with a rod of extra length but with the strength to play big fish and the sensitivity not to bump everything off....?

That got me looking at Trotter rods or a specific Brabel orientated longer trotting rod and the BFW Trotter (probably in 15"), question is has anyone had one or what would be an equal alternative....?

Andrew,

See if you can get hold of an old Seer Trotter rod, I have a 13' version and it is very light but has a lot of backbone. That said Free Spirit do a trotter along with the Fox specialist float rods.

Barbel Trotting Rod

Best Barbel Trotting rod I ever owned was Designed by Paul Boote who posts on here, the Graham Phillips Barbel Trotter. Loved mine and abused it on everything, even had Carp to mid 20's on it, then one day in a hurry I shut my car door on it !! Never been able to locate one since.

If your built like Arnie, then the 15 footer should be ok for you. Failing that test then you wont go far wrong with a Shimano Aerocast 15 foot specimen float, had barbel to 12lb so far, also great for bits.

The 15' BFW SU trotter is not a light rod by any means. It is however capable of handling any barbel thrown at you.

Mine was made for me by Bob Gill and is a work of art. I asked Bob to balance the rod by adding internal weights to the handle such that when I hold the rod above the centrepin reel it is totally balanced with no tip drop which you can get on the longer rods. Although heavier than normal when felt in the bag, once you're fishing with it you don't feel it.

Cracking piece of kit which due to time constraints I don't do it justice.
