Harrison Torrix 11 ft 2lb for Tench or the 11 ft 1.75lb

Hello All,
Not long joined your wonderful site, hoping to pick the brains of fans of the 11ft Torrix rods and how members think the rods would suit angling for old red eye, the Tench, any thoughts or experiences would be appreciated, sorry if I have gone over ground that has already been covered in the past!
Many thanks.

Hi Mark, if you're casting anything over 50yda , I would personally opt for the 2lb, as there really isnt that much in it.
Both have similar playing categories being tippy with plenty of reserve.
But if you're casting up to 40yds the 1.75 would be great.

Hello Jim, Thanks for the information, I have heard good things regarding these rods and looking forward to trying one out!

The 11ft / 1.75lb is an absolute gem of a rod when used for rolling meat and it’s also great for floater fishing at close range. However in my experience it doesn’t feel quite right when using it for anything else.

Hello Richard, thank you for your message, all food for thought!, could I please ask in what way it doesn’t the rod feel right when using for anything else?
Thanks Mark

Like conventional say 2 ounce lead barbel style? Why in the name of all that's Holy why not? It's probably the rod for 90% of situations on most rivers.

I love the 1.75lb 11ft Torrix as a barbel rod - it is a gem. But while it will do a job for tench, their are better options imo. In 12ft, the Chimera and Interceptor blanks rule supreme, imo. For an 11ft rod, I'd look at the SU Avon or GTI blanks - the extra cushioning in the butt section allows you to fish with lower diameter hooklengths often needed for tenching.

It's a wand of a rod, I have fluked two over 15lb barbel on this rod, and was never an issue. A classic all rounder.
I have never used similar for tench, but should be fine, I suppose you will fish carp style? Well they would be fine, I use 12 ft 1.5 tc Drennan specialist rods for most of my Tenching and never considered Torrix Tbh.
Hello Neil, many thanks, yes carp style and in the margins hence the interest in an 11ft and a rod that could cope with the odd carp to 10lb when I hook one I don’t want!

Hello Joe, thanks, I had thought about the GTI Blank but not used one, I will have to do some researching!
Same with the SU Avon, would the GTI be a good all round tench rod, I do like using a slider float rig as well as ledger.

I’ve recently got an SU Avon and agree it’s got plenty of cushioning in the butt. It’s no push over though and has handled a few barbel of 10/11lb with bags of power left in the blank. That’s been with some water in the Severn and Trent as well, so not low summer levels.

I do like the more traditional action of the SU Avon. The 11ft 1.75lb torrix feels crisper and more modern but I haven’t hooked anything big enough to get past it locking up and the fish just rolling over yet. Personally I think it saps the joy a bit out of modest sized fish, despite being a lovely rod. I’ve seen Richard Issac’s says it’s a big fish rod and I hope to find out one day 😁

One thought is, how big to the tench get and how big do the carp get? If the tench don’t get past 5/6lb you might not notice the lower end of the torrix. And if the carp get much bigger then perhaps the grunt lower down the torrix would be useful.

Hello Christian, many thanks for the reply, tench 5/6lb odd 8/9lb (if very lucky) the carp I do try and not fish for but sometimes I land more than the tench! max around 12lb

It’s can do most things but it’s not designed for lobbing 2-3oz leads out. I also used it for floater fishing and it didn’t have the pick up necessary when fishing at anything other than close range. I’ve had carp up to upper doubles and a friend had a 17lb barbel on it (that’s another story!) and I’ve had a mid double pike on it so it’s got plenty of power. Gorgeous rod for the right sort of thing…

Why do you say it's no good for lobbing 2-3oz leads, id say it's bang on the mark for just that ... even 4oz at a push, I have 2lb tips as well as 1.75 , and I'm happy to lob 6oz 10yrds with my 2lb tops....

I’d agree with it feeling great with 2-3oz leads.

There is so much subjectivity with rods.
