HARRISON ACURIX 2.5

I’ve played with a blank but not actually fished with one.

I think it would make a superb heavy water barbel rod.

Having said that I’ve just found some old 2.5 test curve Chimera rods. Very cheap.

They might become my heavy barbel rods - if this Spring’s field test on some potentially big tench (and maybe serious carp) goes according to plan.

If all that works; I might even sell my Chimera 3’s.

Built myself a custom pair for local barbel/carp fishing sometime back - not used as yet.

Yes I have four two built by me two by WVA a few years ago. Zander and Barbel rods on the Trent and Wye , flood water in the Thames. Very responsive tips , nice playing action. Will throw big weights effortlessly. I have burgundy blanks and only criticism is the colour tones vary , would buy natural colour now.

Don't sell the Chimera 3s!!!!

Keep both.

Why do I need more rods, when really I need less !

More seriously; Im trying to down size my tackle collection and reduce my investment where possible. I will probably get £100 back for each C3 and that’s significantly more than the C2.5’s cost even factoring in some re-ringing.

I bought 3 of them and gave one to a mate as he’s broken a couple of Harrison prototypes recently. He reckons it’s fantastic - will cast heavy leads and has a lovely action. He has caught some serious fish on it, but they weren’t barbel.

I do like a bargain.

If it makes sense for you Tim then yeah go for it. I personally couldn’t let my c3’s go. 3-6oz work I’m yet to find a more capable blank.

However I agree with you that less rods and utilizing a rod for a number of tasks is a better way to do things and downsize if necessary.

Unless yours are very rough I’d expect you to get alot more than £100 for a C3. Mine (although well specced) we’re not far off £700 for the pair new.

Agree 100% - C3s designed specifically for barbel fishing ( or should I say the Dave Lumb version is). Other than far bank trent fishing I can't think of many jobs a C3 can't do - properly launch a loaded 4oz Richy feeder yet absorb big lunges under the rod tip.
Please let me know at £100 a go, I'll snap your hand off . The 2.5 chimera is a great rod and I have used for locked up snag fishing with heavy mono and it was great , but C3 is IMHO better
I have a 2.5 & 2.75 and they make brilliant Pike river rods, and obviously are designed for carp so you do have a really versatile multi-species rod and if they're a bargain then it's better than money in the bank.
But then I am a hoarder and don't sell anything.

CS12-SU 12ft/2lb 4oz: £275.00
Eight rings plus tip - 25mm butt/8mm tip.
I was lucky enough to use this blank before it was launched and became known as the Chimera Specialist 3. Somewhat stiffer in the tip and more through actioned in the butt than the other Chimera Specialists. Capable of casting, that's casting not swinging out, six ounce leads (and more) or loaded five ounce feeders yet still forgiving enough to avoid hook pulls when using braided line. Just hang on and let it bend! A great rod for the bigger rivers, and fish, in any conditions and for fishing method feeders on stillwaters.
I've wondered is the Chimera Specialist the same as Chimera - guess it is and not important?
But DL explains above the subtle changes to other Chimera specialists, which are just words, but on the bank it is noticeablely different to the other TCs, and I have them all the way from 1.25 - 3lb

It’s the same blank no matter who builds it Paul. Chimera 3, chimera specialist no 3, peregrine heavy water etc etc. same blank and you have it built how you want it.
Dave built mine for me to entirely my own spec.
I like them rung up 7+ tip

You like the K series rings - are they that good?
Yeah they really are.
I’ll tell you why I like them. It’s the strength of them. A single legged k series guide is as strong if not stronger than a double legged conventional guide.
But you’ve got less weight, you’ve got half the number of whippings and you’ve got the anti frap qualities as well. For me it’s the incredible strength that is achieved through a single legged guide.

You guys take my parsimonious ramblings and wind ups much too seriously !

I fully admit that there is nothing wrong with my C3’s either in their fishing capabilities or their condition, even though I bought them second hand. And they were built by Dave Lumb who I know reasonably well.

Im just trying different rods for a bit of fun - it might work, it might not. When I’ve caught a 10lb tench and a 40 lb carp on them I will have a better idea on whether they might suit my flood water barbel fishing ! Some might say it’s pointless as I haven’t caught a barbel for 2 seasons…

I take a slightly perverse delight in using un-fancy gear to catch decent fish Viz cheap Wychwood rods to catch big carp, using bright orange line (Berkeley Trimax) as a wind up when tench fishing and now it’s Okuma reels and unusual unwanted Chimeras.

The Okumas are a good example - I bought them on the strength of the reviews - just to see if I liked them and they have ended up replacing 5 much more expensive Shimanos. My fishing mate borrowed one and then he went out and bought some too. And he’s a much better barbel angler than me - he actually caught one or two last season…….but even he’s not good enough to have caught one this season.

I do admit to owning some top of the line gear for jobs where I think it makes a difference eg saltwater fly fishing and maybe even trotting.
