Greys x flite barbel rods!!!

Alright people
Right I've been offered a pair of barbel x flites with Avon tops 1.5/1.75 & was just wondering if anyone use them or have used them any feedback would be grateful???

can't say about 1.5/1.75. I have 1.5/2lb. The only thing wrong is that the quiver tips fit the heavier 2lb top. If you wish to use a light quiver you usually want a lighter rod. Other than that rings could be a bit bigger to deal with weed in the summer

I bought a second hand one with 1.75 and 2lb tips, plus a spare 1.75 tip with no white bit and dulled down varnish, plus all the quivers for £100. Love it. perfect for barbel. and the quivers are perfect for chub. My advice, buy 'em.

Hello Mark,

I love mine as well, absolutely superb rods .
With the different test curves tops and avon section with three tips they will handle the majority of barbel fishing conditions/locations .
I wouldn't hesitate in buying them ......... plus if you don't like them you could always sell them on EBAY where they fetch around £100

love mine great rods and the1.5lb tip is great for tench on the float not used the the quiver tips yet and got mine for £99 brand new bargain:D

I did think that this was going far too well for Greys!;):D
My X-Flites aren't bad at all, neither are the original Prodigys.
I've yet to manage to break any of them in the years that I've had them, bonus. You'd think that they blow up at the drop of a hat the way some go on.

I would suggest to anyone buying a Greys barbel rod that they think about the TC they get. I've always felt that the test curves are overstated in comparison to rods from other manufacturers.

And I knew my post would get that reply but there's no denying that both their Barbel and Carp rods have a habit of snapping more than other makes. Ofcourse not all will but when I spoke to Greys about mine it didn't come as a surprise to the chap on the phone and he didn't quibble when I asked for a full refund.

I know that there's plenty of forum chatter about it but whether that counts as proof is another matter entirely. It may simply be the Ford Fiesta scenario, plenty of them about to go wrong so lots of reports, where there's not going to be too much about unreliable Ferraris because there isn't the number of them. You also get the situation where people that buy Ferraris don't want to admit that they've spent a fortune on a hunk of junk.

I don't doubt, and never have doubted that people have had Greys rods let go on them. They may even be more susceptible than other comparable brands. However, rightly or wrongly, some folks really get a bee in their bonnet and go to town on brands that let them down. Because of that it can appear worse than it is. I've never seen anyone complain about any number of rod manufacturers. That doesn't mean for one moment that I don't believe that any of their product has let go. One thing I do know, you very rarely see anyone that suffered a rod breakage questioning their own handling and treatment of their kit. It's also amazing how some folks suffer breakages repeatedly.

Anyway, I'm starting to get a sense of de ja vue, so I'll leave it at that.

Essentially a nice rod, that maybe susceptible to quality control. I completely agree with Chris on the TC issue, my 1.5TC Prodigy is way too sloppy. The 2lbTC Specimen Rod is great. If the price is right on the X-Flite, I'd take a punt. I believe that replacement sections are about £25 - and as stated previously, this can only be offered if built into the initial price.

I have x-flites in the 1.5/2lb tc and have had no prob's but as stated before the TC are not that accurate and they are softer than stated compared to other rods with the same tc but in normal conditions on the Trent they are spot on.

My 1.5lb/2lb TC Xflite snapped on an innocuous strike the other week...into a plastic bag as it happened, to add insult to injury.

It snapped about 3 inches down from the base of the quiver tip. Hollow thin wall, as I discovered. No trust in them now and won't chance losing a good fish on one ever again.

Thats unusual Steve.

They usually snap about 9 inches above the mid joint. Once had one go whilst instructing a pupil how to adjust the clutch setting. !!!!
