greys rods

Frequenting many other fishing forums as I do, it's very noticeable that Harrison stuff doesn't have nearly as much kudos elsewhere as it does on the barbel orientated sites. There's lesser interest amongst the carpers but the match/general coarse fraternity would seem to much rather have top end Daiwa gear or old Normark with a smattering of Shimano, Preston and Drennan thrown in the mix. Custom stuff doesn't seem to enter their thinking despite them paying custom prices and more.

I have a pair of Greys Prods with the 1.5 and 2.0lb tops.
Just the job for Barbel when I have to cheat with a bomb at night and the heavier tops are OK for flood work.

I like them very much and I use the 1.5's for Lumpy Tench in the summer and the 2.0's for Pond Pigs when I can't do any proper fishing!

Stuart, Keith only float fishes. I think what he means is he uses the 1.5 and 2lb tips as floats (huge wagglers). No? And he uses a bomb as a single 'shot' to cock them.

Yes, that's what he means. I thought I was being stupid for a moment there.....

Stuart. I wouldn't disagree with much that you have said, except It was a fair response to Lukes initial question about Greys

"with all due respect to all views on here .... you simply cant compare a mass produced blank like the prodigy to something like a torrix ?!"

'I was going to respond to Blakesley, but he's not well.;)

hello gents
what are your thoughts on these rods, was thinking about getting a pair of 1.75 tc rods..
heard mixed reveiws..so come on gents, good or bad please let me know your thoughts..

luke

Go ahead and get some mate nothing wrong with them, bend right throw to the handle and it feels great, agree with others far too much rod snobbery.

Most Barbel rods have a rating of 8 to 10lb line to be used, so if you start using heavier mono or braid you will break most rods if you start tightening the clutch up and applying alot of pressure..If you need to apply lots of pressure then buy yourself a Carp rod 2.75lb test.!!..Im sure that even most Harrison rods are not designed for real heavy mono or braid unless your using stepped up rods over 2lb test, which is then basicly starting to be a carp rod..Top tip of the day.."If a big fish runs, then let it run!..set the clutch properly or dare i say just simply play the fish on backwind"..

harrisons in China?

While we are on the subject of Harrisons rods, could anyone tell me if its true that some models of Harrisons are made in China? & if so which ones?..

Graham,
I note that you recently sold a rather dilapidated 2112b on here for £35.
Have to say, i was rather tempted but already have 4 so i think the missus may have chopped something off if i'd gone for it (me not the rod)!
Recently got an 11 ft Harrison specialist from Tony Kay, It's got a similar action to the Daiwa and looking forward to trying it out. I'm also saving up for a couple of Chimera or Torrix's but things a little tricky at work so hanging on.

Luke,
The 2112b does come up from time to time on fleabay but they are quite sort after and getting rarer. A reasonable second hand one would be around £90, similar to a new prodigy but VASTLY superior..................in my humble opinion!

I would have a look and see what's about.

Regards,
Jeff

Hi Jeff. Actually the Chap that bought it (On Bob Gills Advice) was estatic with it as he also got two avon tops and 4 quiver sections and 2 more inserts! All the rings were good.

I actually got through 4 of these rods over the years. Fantastic, however, despite happily fishing the Severn with 14 feet on....down the inside, at 1.5tc they were pretty worrying to launch more than 4oz out into a big river though.

Even the Torrix 1.75's make me worry a bit for a long, far bank Wye 4oz+ heavy cast.

For Kennet, Loddon and med Thames fishing that I think Luke mainly does, both the rods would be a real treat to use and capable of handling everything yet give real pleasure.

I'm going to go completely against everybody's views here! I have a greys progidy rod and I absolutey love it. Absolutely perfect for the Wye and Bristol Avon and was absolutely fine chucking 3 oz feeders around on the trent.

Harrison Advanced is their name for UK made blanks. The overseas models are just called Harrison.

Ive got greys prodigy specimen rods, you can't fault them, I only wished that I waited a few months longer before I bought them as all the tackle tarts sell off there kit on ebay to by new for the next season.

Just seen 2 prodigy specimens 1.5 / 2lb rods like new go for £75 for both.

I paid £99 each :(

Hi Glenn,

The point is, it's a BIT like sex owning a Harrison or similar, If you've never had it, you don't know what your missing!

Cest la vie!

Regards,
Jeff

LOL, maybe your right, Im just not kind of man that would pay £300 for sex :D

Yeah BUT,

What if it was the best you'd ever had?

Hope this doesn't get out of hand:D

No pun intended there before you all jump in:p

Regards,
Jeff
