Grey's Prodigy PB Barbel Rod

Hi Steve.

I have a couple of them as well as 2 of the x flites which I guess these replaced. I was using the rod in the heavier version a week or so ago to chuck 5oz leads into a rising River Thames. I've also used it for close in carp fishing and in the lighter version they're perfect for tenching or normal Thames Fishing for me.

I've only had 1 barbel of just under 13lb on it but it fought like hell under the tip and the rod was perfect, a real joy to use. Clumsy oaf like I am i also managed to snap the tip and Grey's sent me a whole new rod as they didn't have spare tips!

Beautiful, multi purpose rod imho and backed up with the Grey's customer care. I am slightly biased as have 5 of their rods in total, a power float also, but I'm always impressed by both the performance and build - other than my an heavy handedness I've never had any issues.

A chap i know at our club uses 2 both with center pins. He caught our record 16.5lb Barbel on the Rother River(Sussex) within 2 weeks of joining. Hate him, ive been stalking this fish for months before. He highly rates them in the Avon or quiver top. They also make a excellent trotting rod too
 
Thanks for the replies chaps,I have been a very good boy so I can feel a couple of these rods winging their way in my direction.My better half was very perceptive when I dropped a very unsubtle hint about a late christmas present.
I will report back when I have given them a decent test.
 
Greys make some lovely looking rods, but I too managed to break one (a 2lb Prodigy top) once and read about this happening to others, so I've been a bit wary of them ever since. However, I'm looking for a pair of tench rods with a bit more grunt than my 1.5lb Drennans and am wondering whether or not I should consider Greys. Any advice would be gratefully received.
 
Hi Rod, hope i'm not tempting fate, i have 5 Greys rods, 3 barbel rods, an 11ft-13ft feeder, and a 9ft-12ft stalker. Never had a problem with any of them. Love them to bits. Ive had other rods including Harrisons, but much prefer my Greys. :)

So many Greys seem to snap....personally I would go for the Harrison's, have you considered the Drennan Distance Tench? rare, but awesome rods.
 
Seems to have been a few reincarnations of the Prodigy over the years along with mixed reviews.
I can only speak from personal experience with the 1.75 twin tip barbel that I've used for umpteen years off and on. It's lightweight with a stiffish action and well built for the money. It's handled some good fish without breakage and unlike my old Korum twin tip, the reel fitting has stood the test of time.
Although very neat and tidy, the screw-down reel fittings have never really appealed but are common on most rods nowadays. Never could see the point of having the bit of cork that you hold when playing a fish being able to come loose. If over tightened the cheaper ones break.
It's funny how you can sometimes get tunnel vision with fishing rod actions and test curves. I went away from softer rods for some years and much preferred the Prodigy,...but now have gone back to medium action Harrison's on the Avon and a Martin Bowler 1.5 tc on the Stour. Horses for courses and all that...:rolleyes:

The same as the vast majority of rods then Richard.
There's actually some pretty reasonable carbon comes out of China nowadays anyhow.
For those on a 'below UK blanks' budget......there's nothing wrong with these, along with most of the other major brands.
 
And.....I've had a Harrison torrix snap on the tip without undue pressure or strain.
Just the luck of the draw sometimes.
 
Considered something new for next year... but now think I'll stick with my 5 (!) 15 year old Nash 'Specialist' Tri-Tips then.
I've always been 100% happy with them, so why change eh.

Exactly, if your 100 per cent happy, why try and fix what isn't broke. :) The same reason i,ll stick with my Greys. :)
