Great Angling Mysteries

Senior Member
Not strictly about Barbel fishing simply for amusement . When I read fishing mags / books / articles a few questions strike me over and over again .

1- Who is Ron Thompson ?

2- What are' quality ' fish ? This word is repeatedly used in isolation implying a catch is fantastic , surely this would only be the case if they were ' top quality '' ?

3- Why do the fishing press call anglers '' rods '' , e.g. ''Top Northern rod Joe Lardybum recently took 300 pound of slabs from cess pit lake '' Why not '' reel '' or '' elastic '' ?

4- Why are fishing articled littered with words , like' campaign ', 'blitz ', 'onslaught' ,' attack ', , is this fishing lark warfare ? The Trent Otter would never have recognised such aggresive language to describe the contemplative art .

5- Why 'Sylcast ' as a name for line ? I always though as a kid that ' Slycast '' was a far better name .

I could go on , is it just me ....?

6: Why do barbel anglers speak very disparagingly about so called wonder baits and then have a collective multiple orgasm whenever Garlic spam is back on the shelves !

I was told that "Ron Thompson" was an invented name for the tackle brand. The thinking was that the name represented the everyman angler.

If someone suggested to me that they'd had a net full of quality roach, I'd expect fish averaging around a pound. If they said they had a net full of top quality roach, I'd expect that average to be closer to 2lb. If I had 40lb of roach up to 1.5lb I'd consider it a fantastic catch, but the fish may not be top quality.

7- Why do passers by always tell you that a bloke had a net full of fish yesterday from the swim that you're currently blanking in?

Ron Thompson is the invention of Svendsen tackle!

How or why does a bait "blow"?

Why is it called "bagging up" or am i doing it wrong by using a hook and line?

How do the EE's empty every water way in the land with a couple of bright plastic floats and a telescopic rod................ or so i am told they do!

Bait Blow, blow up..destroyed.
Ron Thompson is the fishing version of Joe blogs clothing.
Bagging up, filling up a keepnet even if your not using one.
EE'S, they don't, it's the ones that use other methods that do.
all very confusing aint it!

Hooks...why, when the size of a hook is determined by the width of the gape....do they call a short shank No.6 a 'wide gape' No.8?

Line...why do they call rubbish brittle line that snaps at 6lb 'pre-stretched' 12lb?

Rods...why do they call a useless floppy rod a 'through action' rod? Is it because the action is through and done with the second you hook anything more than a 3" roach?

Bait...why is some bait called 'the going bait? Where the hell is it going?

Clothing...why is most fishing clothing labelled as '100%' waterproof...when it leaks like a sieve?

Carryalls...why are they called that when at least nine tenths of your gear clearly won't fit into them?

Dunno mate :D

Cheers, Dave.
