Gardner barbel specialist landing net

Senior Member
hi everyone
Ive just purchased a gardner barbel landing net..its a fantastic net except one problem..The screws that hold the frame to the spreader block come loose very easily when landing fish..Ive now remided this problem by putting bigger diameter screw and slightly longer..The screws that come with it are not long enough as they only just pinch inside the frame so therefore come loose easily..Hope this is of some help to anyone else who also has had this problem..:)

Thanks for the tip Craig, i've been pondering a new net for a while since I left it on the roof of the car in the dark one night last autumn...as I sped away from the car park it blew off and was run over by the car behind, never been the same since! The other evening it collapsed on me when landing a decent chub on a high bank so I must bite the bullet and get a new one...The Gardner is one I will be looking at when I visit the tackle shop tomorrow.....Anybody got any other recommendations ? All input appreciated. The one thing I won't have is the same problem as Craig, screws coming loose when I land a fish !! I don't catch many if this season is anything to go by !!!

i got the shakespeare one similar to the abu above, very good it was in 42', i have now a matrix one, now that is good!!

I had the same problem with my Gardner landing net so I put a little superglue on the screw & screwed it back in..seems to have done the trick.

Ditto the above, though only super glued it the other day so time will tell.
Much prefer the pan net, with its solid frame, than the triangular ones. Apart from the carrying, triangular ones are far better in that respect, fit nicely in your rod bag.

try "go outdoors". plenty o barbel nets in there. got a cracker for 8 quid.
always apply a little "lokitite" to all screw threads....its strong, waterproof and above all odourless......that means no smell ! lol

Another advantage with the triangular net is that you can use the net to weigh the fish by removing it from the spreader block quickly. I have both the ABU and Gardner nets by the way and tend to use the ABU more often because of this and also it's quick to remove and chuck in your quiver as said by Rhys.

I think the fact that you have to fix the gardner net from new to make it useable says a lot . Darryls tip on the Abu net is sound . I use a JRC roamer 42 inch , has stood 2 years of abuse and still in one piece . Slightly OTT size wise but light with a good deep net for resting fish

I had to do the same with the screws on my dean macey net, why cant someone just make a good strong net, I for 1 would pay more if it was upto the job,

Thanks Mike, when you consider my Drennan handle was £50 and the nash net £20 they dont seem that expensive. I'd like to have a look at 1 before i bought 1 though

Cor blimey, Chris Brown Products....there's a name I remember from back in the 80's when I ran the Regional Meetings for the Carp Society here in Kent...Quality gear lads, I'm glad he's still producing...I'm sure he used to be in the Bromley area but see from his web site he is further down the county now..... you will not be disappointed.

I use an old Abu net, it is on its tenth or so season so i have had my moneys worth it think!

I have a friend who uses the Chris Brown net and handle, when my one bites the dust that is the one i will replace it with............... brilliant piece of kit.
