Freespirit Tamer Power Float 15'

After a beefier, longer float rod primarily for trotting / barbel; was initially considering a new Acolyte Specimen 15 (already have the Plus in 13') but not sure about frequency of use. Have owned / still own a pair of CTX type blanks (10' Carp / SPM / 9' Travel) and for the money they are quality however worried about weight in hand and trotting all day etc . . .any users or should I bite the bullet and go Acolyte / Hi-S Power Float in 15' . . .?

I've got the Daiwa Connoisseur pro power 14' match rod, Chris. It's a good rod IMO, and I've used it for Barbel on the Trent. Daiwa do a 15' as well. May be another rod for you to consider.

I have the 15ft Tamer. I can only compare it with a 13ft Acolyte plus and it is heavier, but it also has more backbone, and I can trot with it for 4 hours or so without discomfort. I should probably look for a lighter pin than my Adcock Stanton to pair with it.

I have the 13' Acolyte Plus (Compact) and find the balance great with a Daiwa 125M- but my right wrist is a bit knacked from playing tennis so anything a lot heavier I may struggle with . . . I suppose the real comparison is with Acolyte 15' Specimen?

The acolyte is going to be a lot nicer to hold all day by some margin.

I only know of 1 other rod in a similar strength and stiffness bracket that is as comparable in weight and balance and that is long gone and hasn’t been available anywhere for years so that acolyte spec is the best option for 15ft power.

I will say I’ve only just bought Preston’s new offering of a 14ft power float rod which is equally as lovely to hold but a little more pricey. Only available in 14ft mind as a power float but certainly got the balls to land big river barbel.
I can’t tell you much more than that but hopefully after the weekend I’ll know more

I have the Acolyte 15ft Specimen and the original Free Spirit Hi-S 15ft.

Of the two rods my "Go To" is the Free Spirit but equally the Acolyte has accounted for double figure barbel. There is something about the thin walled blank of the Acolyte that makes me fearful of a breakage and reluctant to put it under maximum pressure. I will happily apply the brakes with the Hi-S though.

As a far as weight goes I cannot say it is something I notice but I rarely fish more that 5 hours in a session.

I think Tackle Tavern currently have a used Free Spirit 15ft 'something', for £100.00.

I like the original hi s for its sheer stopping power. It bends a little easier than your acolyte does John but the blank is just immensely strong.
Not tried a tamer though
Are they similar?

As I think you know Rich, I bought a 13ft Power Tamer last year but didn't ever get to use it due to the float fishing season getting cut short due to early autumn floods, being away on holiday etc. Perhaps we should do a comparison session with our various rods?

Sounds a good plan mate

I have the 15ft fs ctx tamer, it is defintely 3pcs.
It is heavier than the accy, I think it is around 210g, but more powerful than my 14ft accy specimen. The rod balanced well with match aerial centrepin or any reel around 260g.

Wouldn't worry about the weight, bit like test curve, action etc. Just match it up with a suitable reel no problem at all... 100 quid sounds a bargain...
