Evening all

I'm off to France this summer for the family hols. We're staying close to Angles Sur l'Anglin which is handy for both l'Anglin and Gartempe rivers.

I can't find anything about either containing barbel but was wondering if anyone here has experience of these rivers? Can't find an awful lot online.

google barbeau and river name. This offline but cached page has some clues.

"Two smaller rivers in department 86 that hold plenty of autumn barbel are the River Clain around Poitiers and the River Gartempe between St Savin and Montmorillon."

I'd recommend you fish quite heavy in France. I went barbel fishing and landed 3 catfish to 20lb with a 1.5lb rod and 10lb line, but it was quite close!

I agree with Mike, go heavy if static but also go light with corn or small bits of meat. Great fun using touch ledger method, if you get on the Barbel it's non-stop fishing.
I also use Fox Arma-Mesh to protect the bait, the hardest pellets and boilies get smashed by the crays and poisson chat.
Don't forget the permit, the Chasseurs carry guns and don't mess about, they do patrol and will confiscate tackle. Although I have been checked by them and once they see you are legit they offer up loads of advice.
Big carp and big cats swim free in France, I always watch the locals and althogh I don't speak French we always seem to communicate.
