Folding shovel

As I spend much of my time fishing on overgrown stretches of the Nidd I thought I'd invest in one of these for the steep banks:

Made by Highlander I picked it up for £9.99 (delivered) on ebay and it arrived today. It looks the business and I intend to do a review on it when I've put it to good use.

only trouble I've found with these fold down shovels is they do exactly that after a while and in my opinion aren't up to much

I carry a cheap metal trowel in the car for minor digging mainly for the obvious when away from "facilities" but i keep a short handle spade in the back of the car from screwfix or tool station cant remebre which and from memory it cost me about £10. If need be it easily fits under the flap of my rucksack for carrying

I think that Graham has provided good advice and that the Army surplus fold up shovels will be better made and less likely to collapse than those from Civvy Street. Perhaps the forces personnel will confirm this or otherwise.

Bought a fold up one from Maplins about 3 years ago which has served me well and still does. I see that they are selling some at present for about the price I paid all those years ago

I'll have to look at the army ones and compare them to the one I've bought (which does look quite substantial and has serrated edges). I needed something as I'm fishing 'virgin' pegs a lot of the time and have to manufacture somewhere to sit.

Army ones are better than the civilian counterparts and the better ones if you can get hold of them from the surplus store is the german army issue ones, they are better than our ones and will last forever, when I returned from Germany I brought 1 with me for just this purpose.

I always take a trowel with me but for virgin banks I brought a small "student" spade with stainless blade from garden centre. It's lightweight & fits in quiver. Ideal for me as I'm student sized...!!!

B&Q do a proper folding shvel in as much as its a half size spade with a pull out stem, mine is good n strong and a lot better than these surplus fold down things

Agree with this, mine is a German army issue and could probably stop a rocket such is the build quality.

Sorry mods for empty post and this. Internet lag issue here please tidy up as required!

sorry guys I disagree with you as the 2 I've had over the years have been puka army ones and they just haven't lasted

In case any one's interested the tool station one in the latest catalogue is £4.93 and before any one asks I have no connection with that company what so ever

I've had one of the 'inferior' ones for years and its been used to extract a stuck car and latterly to break ice! Just the job for the boot of the car.

One point I'd like to mention on a delicate matter  why is it that when an angler needs to answer a pressing call of nature that they do it on the river bank? Here, on the Wye, I've been offended by a multitude of misplaced doo doo when there are hedges and trees all around the field that offer better protection from canoeists and are not stopping me from getting into a favoured swim.

Chaps, if the need is pressing - point yer bum elsewhere!

There, I've said it :)
